Stephen Chow was his family’s only kid, and grew up as a fan of Bruce Lee and Martial Arts. His career began on TV, showed a children’s show (“430 Space Shuttle” (1983)) and became successful. He then received a supporting role and was the best supporter of the Taiwanese Golden Horse Award.

Stephen Chow was born in Hong Kong on 22 June 1962, and spent his young days in Shanghai in China with three sisters. After watching the Bruce Lee talent, he began studying in the Wing Chun style, one of Bruce Lee’s specialities. He gained an interest in martial arts. His training in martial arts was of great service to him and he included it in several of his well known action pictures.

He was a high school graduate in 1982, and he taught an acting school established by T.V.B., a TV station in Hong Kong, where he was denied. The Swordsman Legend, John Woo’s ‘A Better Tomorrow,’ his friend, ‘Waise’ Lee Chi-Hung, aided and was allowed to study night classes. He completed his degree in 1983 and he was hired to house ‘Space Shuttle 430’ a children’s television programme, even if he did not like children. This did not stop him from doing his job as he built a beat-down relationship with costars of the show that fans enjoyed and which led to a five-year programme. During his 1988 final film, he played serious roles for several television programmes, and starred in his debut feature film, in which he was awarded the Best Actor award at a 25th annual Taiwan Film Awards by actor ‘Danny’ Lee Sau-Yin (City on Fire, Johne’s ‘The Killer’) in the Final Justice.

In 1990, in the film ‘All for the Winner,’ which was a comic spin-off of the movie ‘God of Gamblers’ starring the movie Chow Yun-Fat, he introduced his remarkable comedy talent. The film was so popular that starred in the successful sequence, “God of Gamblers 2,” opposite Chow Yun-Fat. He excelled in the area of humour and developed a trade mark that redefined his career during the following years, when he began to produce Hollywood parodies, Japanese Hong Kong movies, such as Fist of Fury 1991, From Beijing to Love, and his debut as director ‘All’s Well Ends Well.’ He won Best Actor of Asia in the Pacific Film Festival for the spoof film “Justice My Foot.”

His thought of integrating sports with action-kung-fu and comedy was born in 2002 with “Shaolin Soccer,” which utilised certain C.G. effects to create astounding sequences of action, using the stylish twist of fights by famed chorespinist “Tony” Ching Siu-Tung. The picture was released with a record of HK$60,000,000 and ranked the highest gross movie in Hong Kong cinema history.

Hollywood also supported the comedy skills of Chow and in 2003, Miramax Films purchased the distribution rights for ‘Shaolin Soccer.’ After ‘Shaolin Soccer”s popularity, Columbia Tristar published his second Kungfu comedy movie, ‘Kung Fu Hustle,’ which he has worked with Yuen Wo-Ping, one of the most important action choreographers in the history of martial art since the 1970’s.

Stephen Chow has continued to create new audiences in action and humour, and his work will continue to thrill people all across the world in the coming years.

I thought martial arts were my big strength, but I found I wasn’t the only one that could actually accomplish these things when I actually became involved in show business. And I haven’t actually been that good compared to many others. So I became a TV host for youngsters.
I intended to capture a mass audience right from the start of my career. And I adore the extraordinary thing, you never see villains dance. For me, the border between humour and the drama is fine; therefore, it is not merely played for laughter. In this novel, too, there is a little romance – something for everyone.
At kung-fu at all, I’m not good. I learned, but of course I’m not an expert.
When I watched Chaplin’s movies, I used to cry. I learned about the underdog’s role from him. This sort of thing moved me, and I found that it worked for the crowd too because most are like me – everyday men. And, because I’ve been from a poor home too.
The reason for doing a restoration is always that the idea is good but the quality is not standard. Quality already exists with Kung Fu Hustle. And in English it would be difficult because everything is about Chinese culture.

When it comes to film production, Stephen Chow seems to be the finest secret in Hong Kong. It would be seen as a superstar and an icon by American standards. While American cinema fans might be familiar with Asian actors such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat, in Hong Kong and most Asian countries Stephen Chow has expanded the audiences’ knowledge. Chow would like to pass through worldwide audiences, however. She would have succeeded in her initial attempt to make Shaolin Soccer if the Miramax studio were not mishandled. But Kung Fu Hustle, his second effort, propelled Chow to finally become the world-class star he has long been.
