Steven Gerrard

He has played most of his 18-year career for Liverpool and has been his club team captain for more than a decade. When Liverpool left for LA Galaxy, he became the third player to make 500 or more appearances at one club in the Premier League. He also served for some time as Captain of the England National Team. 114 matches for England have been played, fourth-most since Peter Shilton, Wayne Rooney, and David Beckham. One of the best in his time, he has scored 125 goals in his career as a senior club and 21 for his national team. He wrote two autobiographies, ‘Gerrard: My Autobiography’ and ‘My Story,’ both in his personal and professional journey outside football. He also appeared in the British sports movie ‘Will.’

Steven George Gerrard was born in Whiston, Merseyside, on May 30, 1980. He’s got an older brother called Paul. His cousin Anthony Gerrard is also a professional soccer player who is Oldham Athletic’s defender.

At the age of 14, he had trials with several clubs, including Manchester United, but he never qualified for the schoolboy’s team of England. At the age of 17, on 5 November 1997, Steven Gerrard signed his first professional contract with Liverpool. One year later, in the Premier League match against Blackburn Rovers, on 29 November 1998, he made his professional debut as a last-minute substitute for Vegard Heggem.

He scored his first goal in a match against Sheffield Wednesday in the 1999-2000 season and his team scored 4-1 on the scoreboard. However, a growth boost caused him repeatedly to experience back problems, while he also performed multiple operations for groin injuries.

After his recovery, he started fifty times in the period 2000-2001 with 10 goals as his team won the FA Cup, the Football League Cup, and the UEFA Cup. He won the title ‘PFA Young Player of the Year’ in the following season, winning the FA Charity Shield and UEFA Super Cup.

In October 2003, Gerrard, who had served as Vice Captain in previous years, was named Liverpool Captain after which he entered into a new four-year contract with the team. He considered moving into Chelsea after a harsh season in 2003-04, but ultimately dropped his £20 million offer and stayed with Liverpool.

However, he helped his crew return from a three-goal deficit to tie up a 2005 Champions League final against A.C. Milan. Later on, he was called the ‘UEFA Football Club of the Year.’

In the following season, he led the team to the 2006 West Ham United FA Cup Final. He scored two goals to win the match. That year, after John Barnes in 1988, he became the first Liverpool player to be elected ‘PFA Player of the Year’

After six years, he helped his team win the final of the Football League Cup against Cardiff City on 26 February 2012. On 13 March 2012, in his 400th match in the Premier League, he scored a hat-trick against Everton.

During the 2011-2012 season, he refused to join Bayern Munich stating he wanted Liverpool to win a couple more trophies. At the end of 2014-15, he ultimately decided to leave Liverpool as the club delayed his contract renewal and was not in the starting line-up for Real Madrid during the Champions League.

The US Major League Football Division signed 18 months Designated Player Contract with LA Galaxy in January 2015. He made his debut for his new team on the 11th of July in a friendly match against Club America, which later that month reached the 22 selected 2015 MLS All-Star Game players.

At the end of 2015, he announced that, after his contract with the club ended, he was considering his retirement in 2016 and eventually retired from professional soccer on November 24. His final game for LA Galaxy was in an MLS Cup match on November 6, 2016. Steven Gerrard began his international career in a match against Ukraine on 31 May 2000. Later that year he was included in the Euro 2000 team but he only played against Germany in one match, which was a substitute.

In September 2001, he scored his first international goal in another match against Germany during the 2002 World Cup qualifier. While England won the 5-1 game, he remained out of the team for his groin injury in the following matches.

He was in the start eleven during Euro 2004, but after losing their quarter-final match against Portugal, his team was eliminated. During his first World Cup in 2006, he won the top-scoring for England with two goals, again in the quarter-finals, after his team lost to Portugal.

He was temporarily the captain of Britain during the Euro 2008 qualifier, but later John Terry was replaced after the team did not qualify for the tournament. He was again appointed captain of the British team in Euro 2012, leading his team to the Euro Quarterfinals. He was also the only player in England to join the UEFA Tournament team.

He led England to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where the team was first removed from the group stage in 1958. In their last group match, he was removed from the captain’s position and announced his retirement from international football on 21 July 2014. Steven Gerrard helped his team win two FA Cups, three League Cups, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Cup, and one UEFA Super Cup during his career.

He was selected from the 18 players of the ‘UEFA Last Team of the Year’ in 2015. Steven Gerrard married his baby sweetheart Alex Curran in the Wymondham Catholic ceremony on 16 June 2007. They have 4 children: 3 girls – Lilly-Ella, Lexie, and Lourdes – and 1 son, Lio. Jon-Paul Gilhooley, 10 years old, one of Steven Gerrards’ cousins, was the youngest victim of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.
