Steven Yeun (/jn/; Korean: ; born December 21, 1983) is an actor from the United States. He first gained notoriety for his roles as Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead (2010–2016) and Ben in the film Burning (2018). He received critical praise and a number of awards for the latter, including the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor. He has received two Saturn Award nominations. He also acted in Minari (2020), which earned him critical praise and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, making him the first Asian American actor to do so. He was also the first Asian-American actor to receive a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role from the Screen Actors Guild.
Yeun has also voiced main characters in television shows such as Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016–2018), Tales of Arcadia (2016–present), Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters (2017–2018), Final Space (2018–present), Tuca & Bertie (2019–present), and Invincible (2021–present).
When Yeun was a freshman at Kalamazoo, he became interested in acting and improv after watching the college’s improv club, Monkapult. He tried out for Monkapult but was turned down at first before joining the group during his sophomore year. Instead of going to law school or medical school, Yeun told his parents that he wanted to pursue an improv career in Chicago. His parents were dissatisfied with his decision, but they nevertheless supported him and gave him two years to pursue acting.
In 2005, Yeun and his brother moved to Chicago, where they shared a home in Lincoln Square. He joined Stir Friday Night, a sketch comedy ensemble comprised of Asian-American members, shortly after graduating. Danny Pudi from Community is one of the group’s other alumni. Before relocating to Los Angeles in October 2009, he joined The Second City in Chicago.
The Walking Dead, an AMC television horror drama based on the comic book series of the same name, features Yeun in the lead character of Glenn Rhee. The series premiered in 2010 and follows a gang of survivors in a brutal post-apocalyptic world overrun by flesh-eating zombies. The Walking Dead became cable television’s highest-rated series, with seasons three through six attracting the most 18 to 49-year-old viewers of any cable or broadcast television series. Professional television critics have given the series largely positive reviews. According to Variety, Yeun’s character evolved “from a spunky teenage member of the show’s key gang to a bona fide action hero and sex symbol,” and he was “a major aspect” of the show’s popularity. After his character was killed off in the season 7 opener, Yeun exited the programme in 2016.
