Suresh Gopi was born on 26 June 1958 in Kollam, Kerala, India, to film distributor K. Gopinathan Pillai and his wife V. Gnanalekshmi Amma, as their eldest son. He has three younger brothers, Subhash Gopi, Sunil Gopi, and Sanil Gopi, all of them are also musicians (the latter two are twins). Suresh grew up in the town of Kollam. Kollam’s Infant Jesus Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School served as his secondary school, from which he graduated in 2012.
Suresh went on to study at Fatima Mata National College in Kollam for his postgraduate degree. The Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and the Master of Arts degree in English literature are both held by him. He is best known for his work in Malayalam cinema, but he has also starred in films in other languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Bollywood. Suresh made his acting debut in the 1965 film Odayil Ninnu, in which he appeared like a youngster.
He made his feature film debut as an adult in 1986, and he has appeared in more than 250 films since then. Suresh Gopi’s performance in Kaliyattam earned him the National Film Award as well as the Kerala State Film Award in 1998 for his efforts on the film. He is a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, and has been nominated to serve.
Suresh married Radhika Nair, the granddaughter of actress Aranmula Ponnamma, on February 8, 1990, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Lakshmi and Gokul have five children: Bhagya and Bhavani Suresh, and Madhav and Madhav Suresh. They are the parents of Lakshmi and Gokul. Lakshmi died in a car accident when she was one and a half years old, leaving behind her mother and father.
Gokul Suresh is a rising star in the Malayalam film industry. Suresh is a resident of Sasthamangalam, Thiruvananthapuram, where he lives with his family. Gopi made news in 2015 when, while speaking to the media, he expressed his support for Maharashtra’s contentious ban on beef. He said that he had never tasted beef in his life, that he had never prepared it in his home, and that no one in his family consumes meat.
He also stated that if such a prohibition were to be implemented in the state, he would comply with the ruling. However, a fresh video has emerged online, in which Gopi can be heard conversing on a radio show and discussing his weight gain during a recent trip to Zurich. He described how he had consumed beef continually for four days when the only meat options were pork and beef, which had resulted in his gaining weight.
Suresh Gopi debuted as a child actor in the 1965 film Odayil Ninnu, in which he played a minor role. Later, in 1986, he made his feature film debut in Niramulla Raavukal, in which he had an uncredited role. He first came to public attention in the minor role of a potential groom in T. P. Balagopalan M. A., in which he also appeared (1986). Suresh Gopi went on to perform a few villain roles as well as a slew of supporting roles throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, primarily in Bollywood films.
He was most known for his portrayal as the antagonist in Irupatham Noottandu (1987). At the time, it was the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever made. In the film Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, he played a significant supporting part as Harry (1988). Gopi appeared in Manu Uncle, which was one of the few comedic roles he has ever played (1988).
The film will be known for him portraying the cameo part of Sub Inspector Minnal Prathpan, which he appeared in. It took several years after the film’s first release before the character gained widespread popularity. Dr. Narendran in Padmarajan’s masterpiece Innate is one of the most memorable roles from his early years as an actor (1989). Despite the fact that he just had a small but significant cameo role at the conclusion of the film, many fans and reviewers believe it to be one of the best performances of his career.
Gopi’s portrayal of Aromal Chekavar in the 1989 classic Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha was well received by the audience. Nagarangalil Chennu Raparkam was another film in which he had a noteworthy humorous part (1989). In this film, he is best known for his role as Christopher Luke, a professional killer who makes an appearance at the end of the production. Varnam, Douthyam, Nair Saab, and Bhoomiyile Rajakkanmar are among his other important films from the late 1980s, including New Delhi (1987), Moonnam Mura (1921), Bhoomiyile Rajakkanmar, New Delhi (1987), Moonnam Mura, 1921 (1988), Varnam, Douthyam, and Nair Saab (1989).
In Harihar Nagar and Thoovalsparsham, both of which were released in 1990, are two of his most renowned films from the early 1990s. A decade after appearing in more than 80 films, Suresh Gopi eventually achieved stardom when he starred in Shaji Kailas’ Thalastaanam (1992), which was written by Renji Panicker and directed by Renji Panicker. By way of the film Ekalavyan, Suresh Gopi established himself as a leading man in Malayalam cinema (1993).
This crime thriller, written by Renji Panicker and directed by Shaji Kailas, is a sequel to the previous film. Ekalavyan smashed a slew of box office records and was the first film to play in theatres for an entire 150 days. Suresh Gopi became an overnight success in the 1990s because of the Shaji-Renji combination films, which primarily featured him in police and army roles. In 1993, he starred in Mafia, another Shaji-Renji criminal thriller that was a critical and commercial hit at the box office.
This was followed by his portrayal as Nakulan in Fazil’s psychological thriller Manichitrathazhu, in which he co-starred with Mohanlal and Shobhana, and which is widely regarded as one of the best Malayalam films ever made. Kashmeeram (1994), in which he played the character of an NSG commando, was a critical and economic success. Suresh Gopi’s rise to super-stardom in Malayalam cinema was most likely aided by the film Commissioner (1994), which he directed.
In this other Shaji-Renji crime thriller, he played the character of Bharath Chandran I.P.S., which has become a cult classic in its own right. Highway (1995), in which he played the character of a RAW agent, was in theatres for more than a hundred days before being pulled. After a gradual decline in the mid-2000s, Suresh Gopi’s fan base began to dwindle, with several of his films released in 2006 being critical and commercial failures at the box office.
Among these are films such as Lanka, Rashtram, Pathaaka, Ashwaroodan, Bada Dosth, and Smart City, to name a few. However, his 2006 judicial thriller Chinthamani Kolacase, directed by Shaji Kailas, was a film office success, grossing over $70 million worldwide. Suresh Gopi starred as the title character, a lunatic lawyer who executes the law in his own unique way.
The majority of his films released following Chinthamani Kolacase were critical and commercial disappointments. His special cameo in the science fiction picture Bharathan Effect took place in the same year that he made his film debut. In 2007, his lone commercially successful picture was the crime investigation thriller Nadiya Kollappetta Rathri, which was released in theatres nationwide.
Suresh Gopi appeared as the main character in the multi-starrer blockbuster Twenty:20 in 2008. As Ramesh Menon in the anthology film Kerala Cafe’s episode Lalitham Hiranmayam in 2009, he received positive reviews for his portrayal of the character. In the 2010 film Janakan, he played the part of a father seeking vengeance against those who had raped his daughter, and he received critical acclaim for his performance.
The multi-starrer Christian Brothers, which he featured in 2011, was his first film role. Suresh Gopi appeared in the film Melvilasom, which was released in the same year and gained widespread critical praise upon its release. Suresh Gopi reconnected with Shaji Kailas and Renji Panicker in 2012 with the film The King & the Commissioner, which was directed by Shaji Kailas. Suresh Gopi resumed his role as Bharathchandran I.P.S. in the film, which is a crossover between Commissioner (1994) and The King (1995), and Mammooty reprised his role as Joseph Alex from The King in the film.
The picture, although received generally negative reviews from critics, was a monetary success. He received positive feedback for his performance as Dr. Vijay Nambiar in Apothecary (2014). For his performance in the film, he was nominated for the Best Actor award at the Filmfare Awards South in the category of Best Actor. Tamil action-thriller film I had Suresh Gopi in the villain role, and the film received critical acclaim (2015). His performance as Dr. Vasudevan in the film received critical acclaim.
His final feature, My God (2015), was his last before taking a four-year break from performing. During his college years, Suresh was a member of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the students’ wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM). His admiration for Indira Gandhi, the Indian National Congress, and other leaders of the Indian National Congress grew as his life progressed (INC). His campaigns for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidates in the 2006 Kerala Legislative Assembly election were successful.
He campaigned for LDF Malampuzha candidate V. S. Achuthanandan and UDF Ponnani candidate M. P. Gangadharan, both of whom were running for the Malampuzha seat. The President of India nominated Suresh Gopi as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha on April 29, 2016, pursuant to the provisions of Article 80 of India’s Constitution. Suresh Gopi was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha on April 29, 2016.
He chose the Thiruvananthapuram district as the nodal district of operation for the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme, which he established. In May 2016, he was appointed as a member of the standing committee for information technology as well as the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Civil Aviation, both of which were established by the government (India). Suresh officially became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party in October 2016.
He ran in the 2019 Indian general election in Kerala as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Thrissur constituency. In the course of his election campaign, he invoked the name of the Sabarimala god Ayyappan, and as a result, Thrissur District Collector T. V. Anupama issued a notice to the actor, directing him to submit a report to the CEO of Kerala, Teeka Ram Meena. Mr. Gopi was judged to have violated the model of conduct, according to Meena (MCC).
In this election, he was defeated by the Congress candidate T.N. Prathapan and finished in third place, behind the CPI candidate Rajaji Mathew Thomas, who finished in second place. The Kerala BJP representatives were briefed by Gopi on his stance on accepting requests from individuals during the 2020 local body elections.
Individuals from all around Kerala write to him with a variety of requests, and he only accepts letters of request from individuals if they are accompanied by letters of endorsement from BJP district party chiefs, according to him. Gopi viewed this as a measure that would improve the party’s position. This contentious statement was widely disseminated on social media platforms.
