Mark Moshe Kasher, an American stand-up comedian, writer, and actor residing in the Los Angeles region, was born on July 6, 1979. Kasher was named “Best New Comic” by iTunes in 2009, and his comedy CD Everyone You Know Is Going to Die, and Then You Are! was one of iTunes’ top 20 comedy albums that year. Kasher was born in Queens, New York, and relocated with his mother and brother to Oakland, California, when he was one year old. Kasher grew up in the Temescal and Piedmont Avenue districts of North Oakland, where his family relied heavily on public assistance and food stamps. Kasher, the son of deaf parents, began working as a sign-language interpreter when he was 17 years old. Kasher’s parents met in 1967 at the World Games for the Deaf and divorced when he was nine years old.

Steven, a former painter born to secular, communist Jewish parents, became a Hasidic Jew in the Satmar community in Brooklyn when Kasher was four years old; Steven’s grandfather, coming from Hungary, was a New Square Skverer Hasid.
