Timothy Michael Dolan is a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. He was born on February 6, 1950. His appointment by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 made him the eleventh and current archbishop of New York. He has held this position since 2009. Dolan was promoted to cardinal in 2012 after serving as president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) from 2010 to 2013. According to the National Catholic Reporter, Dolan embodies conservative ideals and has a captivating personality that shines through in the media.

Earlier in his career, he was the Pontifical North American College in Rome rector from 1994 until 2001, an auxiliary bishop of St. Louis from 2001 to 2002, and the archbishop of Milwaukee from 2002 until 2009. Timothy Dolan, the oldest of five children, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 6, 1950. His parents, Robert (1925-1977) and Shirley (née Radcliffe) Dolan (1928-2022), welcomed their first child into the world that day. His father was an aviation engineer who worked for McDonnell Douglas and held the floor supervisor position.

He also has two sisters in addition to his two brothers, one of them, Bob, is a former presenter of a radio discussion program. After some time, the family relocated to Ballwin, Missouri, where they were active members of the Holy Infant Roman Catholic Church. Dolan showed early signs of having a great interest in pursuing a career as a Roman Catholic priest, and he was reportedly quoted as stating, “I don’t think there was ever a point in my life when I didn’t want to be a priest. As a youngster, he would also act as though he were attending church services.

In 1964, Dolan enrolled at Saint Louis Preparatory Seminary, which was located in Shrewsbury, Missouri. In subsequent years, he attended Cardinal Glennon College in Shrewsbury, Missouri, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy. Cardinal John Carberry chose for him to get his education at the Pontifical North American College, which is located in Rome. In 1976, Dolan attended the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas and received the degree of Licentiate in Sacred Theology from that institution.

Dolan was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Louis on June 19, 1976, and Auxiliary Bishop Edward O’Meara presided over the ceremony. After that, Dolan spent the years between 1965 and 1979 working as an associate priest at the Roman Catholic parishes of Curé of Ars in Shrewsbury and Immacolata in Richmond Heights. After that, he started his Ph.D. studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., with Reverend John Ellis as his advisor. He focused his research on the church’s history in the United States. Bishop Edwin O’Hara of Kansas City was the subject of Dolan’s thesis, which was later turned into a book and published.

Once Dolan moved back to Missouri, he began working in the pastoral field in 1983 and continued until 1987. During this period, he worked with Archbishop John L. May to improve the archdiocesan seminary that was in existence at the time. After that, Dolan was appointed secretary at the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C., where he acted as a liaison between the nunciature and the dioceses in the United States. In 1992, he was vice-rector at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, where he also worked as a spiritual director and taught classes on the history of the Church. In addition to that, he taught theology as an adjunct professor at St. Louis University, which is located in St. Louis.

Dolan served as the rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome from its founding in 1994 until its closing in June 2001. During his time in office, he was responsible for publishing Priests for the Third Millennium and teaching positions at the Angelicum and the Pontifical Gregorian University. In addition, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon him the title of Monsignor in 1994. Dolan was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee on June 25, 2002, making him the seventh person to hold that position. On August 28, 2002, he was ordained to the role of the bishop at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee.

Dolan said the sexual abuse crisis that emerged during his term as diocese bishop made his job difficult and haunted him. According to the reporting of WTAQ news, “An attorney claims that at least 8,000 children in the Milwaukee Catholic Diocese were victims of sexual abuse at the hands of over 100 clergy members and other perpetrators. When Dolan was archbishop, the number of men who decided to pursue a career in the priesthood and other religious vocations increased. During the sermon Dolan delivered in September 2002 during an outdoor mass, he paid a little homage to the Green Bay Packers by donning a “cheesehead” cap for a moment.

In addition, he is the author of the books Called to Be Holy (2005) and To Whom Must We Go? Lessons from the Apostle Peter (2008), and he is also the co-host of the television show Living Our Faith with his brother. In June of 2012, it became public knowledge that Dolan “When Cardinal George was the Archbishop of Milwaukee, he is said to have “authorized payments of up to $20,000 to sexually abusive priests as an incentive for them to agree to dismissal from the priesthood” and that “the archdiocese did make such payments…, thus allowing the church to remove them from the payroll.”Dolan was responsible for serving as the apostolic administrator of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay on September 28, 2007.

He remained in this role up to the nomination of David L. Ricken as the Bishop of Green Bay on July 9, 2008, when he resigned from his post. Dolan became the eleventh Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York on February 23, 2009, after being selected for the position by Pope Benedict XVI. Almost 2.5 million Roman Catholics are under its care, making it the second-largest archdiocese in the United States, behind only the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Cardinal Edward Egan, who had reached the required retirement age of 75 and stepped down in 2007, was replaced by him. Dolan claims he was aware of his appointment “nine or ten days” before the announcement that it would be officially made. Recalling the phone call he received from Apostolic Nuncio Pietro Sambi, as opposed to his appointments as Auxiliary Roman Catholic Bishop of St. Louis and Archbishop of Milwaukee when Dolan was told that the Pope (John Paul II) “would like [him] to” take the posts, he said that Sambi “was quite factual” in that he told him that “the Pope (Benedict XVI) had appointed [him]” to New York, giving Dolan little choice other than to accept.

Before Dolan was appointed, his name had been brought up on multiple occasions as a potential successor to Egan; however, he played down the significance of such speculation by stating, “My name is brought up for some reason whenever there is a significant new attraction opening, such as what we have seen with Washington, Baltimore, and Detroit, and now New York. I’m flattered.” According to John L. Allen Jr., who is the Vatican correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter, Pope Benedict’s appointment of Cardinal Timothy Dolan follows a pattern of choosing prelates similar to the works of Donald Wuerl, Edwin O’Brien, and Dennis Schnurr “who adhere to a generally conservative political philosophy as well as a conservative theological perspective, but who are also positive, religious figures open to conversation.

Dolan has committed to combat anti-Catholic prejudice, particularly the assertion that the Catholic Church is backward because of its stance against marriage between people of the same gender and abortion rights for women. He had high hopes that the individuals whose lives had been upended by the sexual abuse scandals, which he referred to as “a constant source of humiliation,” would regain their faith in him. Dolan was given the honorary title of Grand Cross Conventual Chaplain upon his induction into the Order of Malta in 2003.

Since 2009, he has served the American Association of the Order of Malta as the principal chaplain. In 2012, he was elevated to Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion, a level generally reserved for cardinals. In a ceremony on April 15, 2009, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dolan was solemnly installed as the Archbishop of New York. He wore the pectoral cross that Archbishop John Hughes had worn, his predecessor from the 19th century. Eleven cardinals and numerous elected politicians from New York were present.

At a ceremony on June 29, 2009, at St. Peter’s Basilica, he was presented with the pallium by Pope Benedict XVI. The pallium is a vestment that is worn by metropolitan bishops. Immediately after arriving in New York, Dolan directed a couple of “strategic planning” procedures that included extensive public consultation. Both processes looked at the archdiocese’s hundreds of grade schools (during the 2009–2013 “Pathways to Excellence” period) and parishes (“Making All Things New”, 2010–2015).

Ultimately, Dolan announced that dozens of underutilized schools and parishes would be shut down or merged with others in their neighborhoods. This decision was made in response to decades-long trends of shifting populations, increasing expenses, declining attendance, and decreasing clergy. In the Pontifical Irish College in Rome, Dolan oversaw and directed a comprehensive evaluation of the organizational structures and procedures from 2011 to 2012. His report was very critical of the university, and as a direct consequence, three Irish faculty members were dismissed, while a fourth resigned from their position.

The Vatican provided a copy of the visitation report to each of the following four archbishops in Ireland: Cardinal Seán Brady, who serves as the Archbishop of Armagh; Diarmuid Martin, who serves as the Archbishop of Dublin; Michael Neary, who serves as the Archbishop of Tuam; and Dermot Clifford, who performs as the Archbishop of Cashel. A response that had been prepared for them said, “a profound bias seems to have colored the visitation, and from the beginning, it led to the negative tone and substance of the report.”

Carnivorous Catholics, however, are in luck since on March 17, the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, ruled that he would once again grant a special dispensation to enable them to consume meat. As a former altar boy from Limerick, I must say that it is refreshing to see the Catholic Church making some progressive changes. “That makes people’s decision-making simpler on the big day,” said Donovan, the owner of Bloom’s Tavern in Midtown East, which goes through 300 pounds of corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day, their most significant sales day. Bloom’s Tavern goes through 300 pounds of corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day.

Lamorte advised Catholics to “choose any other penitential practice instead by making an equal sacrifice on the day itself” as an alternative to fasting on Ash Wednesday. The pastor of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament on the Upper West Side, Father David Nolan, believes that Catholics should not be required to give up anything to fulfill their obligation to abstain from eating meat. According to Monsignor Joseph P. LaMorte, the vicar general of the Archdiocese of New York was quoted in a statement, “As a general rule, the church creates rules and expects us to adhere by them.” “Yet, depending on the circumstances, it may sometimes be feasible to gain an exemption from the need to comply with a law.”
