Today (also known as The Today Show or NBC News Today) is an NBC morning news and conversation show that airs in the United States. The show first aired on January 14, 1952. It was the first of its kind on American television and in the globe, and after 68 years on the air, it is the fifth-longest-running television series in the United States.
It began as a two-hour weekday programme from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., but in 1987 and 1992, it was expanded to Sundays and Saturdays. In 2000, the daily broadcast was increased to three hours, and in 2007, it was increased to four hours (though over time, the third and fourth hours became distinct entities). Until the late 1980s, when ABC’s Good Morning America overtook it, the network’s dominance was almost unchallenged by the other networks.
Today reclaimed the Nielsen ratings lead the week of December 11, 1995, and kept it for 852 weeks until Good Morning America surpassed it again the week of April 9, 2012. The show was created by television executive Sylvester Weaver, who was then vice president of NBC, and premiered on January 14, 1952. From 1953 until 1955, Weaver was the company’s president, and it was at this period that Today’s late-night companion The Tonight Show debuted.
