Tommaso Whitney is a well-known American professional wrestler. He was born on May 8, 1985. He is now under contract with WWE and goes by the ring name Tommaso Ciampa when competing on the Raw brand of the company’s various shows.2005 Whitney launched his professional career by participating in several independent campaigns. Since 2011, he has been employed with Ring of Honor, where he remained until 2015.
Later, in 2015, he appeared on WWE as part of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, a competition for tag teams. He founded the tag team with Johnny Gargano known as #DIY (Do It Yourself). The year after that, he earned a contract with WWE and competed in the Cruiserweight Classic, a tournament for cruiserweight wrestlers; nevertheless, Gargano won the first round against him.
Ciampa has won the NXT Championship three times and the NXT Tag Team Championship once. Outside of the World Wrestling Entertainment organization, he is most well-known for his career in Ring of Honor (ROH), where he has held the title of ROH World Television Champion on one occasion. Beyond Wrestling (BW), Chaotic Wrestling (CW), Top Rope Companies (TRP), and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) are among the various independent wrestling companies for which he has competed as a wrestler.
After receiving instruction from WWE Hall of Famer Killer Kowalski, Whitney debuted in January 2005. Most of his professional wrestling career was spent competing for indie organizations based in Massachusetts, the most notable of which were Chaotic Wrestling and Top Rope organizations. On the 22nd of May in 2005, he competed in a bout for the IWF Junior Heavyweight Championship against the reigning champion Sean Royal. However, he was defeated.
Later on the same day, he participated in a battle royal to determine who would be the number one contender for the IWF Heavyweight Championship. He did not emerge victorious from the match. In 2005, Whitney debuted as “Tommy Penmanship” in Chaotic Wrestling. Fred Sampson defeated him in a qualifying game on April 1 for admittance into the Chaotic Wrestling Heavyweight Championship Tournament. He was hoping to compete in the tournament.
Penmanship and Arch Kincaid formed a tag team in June to compete against the Logan Brothers for the Chaotic Wrestling Tag Team Championship. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful. On August 8, Penmanship earned his first title by claiming the Chaotic Wrestling New England title with his victory against Chase del Monte.
After successfully defending it against a former del Monte, Jason Blade, and Psycho, he was ultimately defeated by Psycho at Cold Fury 5, where he had held it for the previous six months. After that, Penmanship went a few months without winning a singles match, losing to Matt Logan and Psycho. However, in a doubles battle with Psycho, he was victorious in the first round of the Lethal Lottery Tournament.
Both Penmanship and Psycho were successful in their bids to compete in the battle royal that would decide the top challenger for the CW Heavyweight Championship. However, Luis Ortiz emerged victorious in the match. Penmanship suffered another defeat at the hands of Psycho at Breaking Point 2006, this time in a Psycho Rules bout with Tommy Dreamer serving as the special referee. The match between Penmanship and Handsome Johnny took place on May 19 and resulted in Penmanship winning the Chaotic Wrestling Heavyweight Championship.
Penmanship became the title of the Chaotic Heavyweight division after claiming victories over Bryan Logan, Del Monte, and Max Bauer. He was the champion until February 2007, when Brian Milonas defeated him in a bout called “Loser leaves CW” and took the title away. On the episode of SmackDown! that aired on July 14, 2005, he appeared as Thomas Whitney, ESQ, one of Muhammad Hassan’s attorneys, and engaged in a confrontation with The Undertaker. Before being assaulted by The Undertaker, Tommaso delivered a statement that Hassan had provided.
Under the ring name Demarso Whitney, he competed on the episode of Velocity that aired on December 17, and Jamie Noble beat him. During the outbreak of Heat that aired on August 25, 2006, he and Kofi Kingston participated in a dark match against Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch. It was revealed that Whitney had signed a developmental deal with WWE on February 4, 2007, and was assigned to wrestle for Ohio Valley Wrestling.
On the 21st of February, he made his debut while wrestling under the name Tommaso. He was forced to step aside from in-ring activity after sustaining an injury, and during this time, he became known as Dr. Thomas, Anger Management Specialist. During this time, he managed Bolin Services (Charles Evans and Justin LaRouche), which won the OVW tag team championships.
Dr. Thomas would finally make his in-ring debut at some point during a 6-man tag match at Six Flags. He would team up with Bolin Services to compete against Elijah Burke and Cryme Tyme. Whitney introduced his new persona on June 27, 2007, when he started wrestling under the ring name Prodigy while wearing a mask. Whitney’s WWE developmental contract was terminated on August 9, and he was given his freedom.
At the tail end of 2007, he returned to the independent circuit. Tommaso won the MWF Television Championship on September 29 after claiming victories over A.J. Styles and Eddie Edwards. Ciampa first appeared in Harley Race’s World League Wrestling in September 2008. He competed in the Nine-Man Battle Royal in October for the WLW Heavyweight Championship, which was ultimately won by Go Shiozaki.
Additionally, Ciampa made two failed challenges for the WLW Tag Team Championship: the first time was with Steve Anthony on November 22, 2008, and the second time was with Marc Godeker on March 21, 2009. After moving back to New England in 2008, Ciampa went on to take part in the ECWA Super 8 Tournament in both 2009 and 2010, eventually becoming victorious in 2011 with his victory over Adam Cole in the championship match.
Ciampa debuted for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) on August 30, 2013, as he joined the 2013 Battle of Los Angeles. Unfortunately for him, he was defeated by Brian Cage in his first-round bout. A dark match contested by him, Alex Payne, and Ernie Osiris ended in defeat for them at Honor Reclaims Boston at the hands of Bobby Dempsey, Grizzly Redwood, and Rhett Titus. In 2007 and 2009, Ciampa competed for Ring of Honor in the organization’s dark contests.
Ciampa started his full-time employment with ROH in January 2011. During the Ring of Honor Wrestling tapings on January 22, he won the match against Mike Sydal. He became a member of Prince Nana’s heel stable, The Embassy. In the following games, he was victorious against Adam Cole and Grizzly Redwood. On April 1, he made his debut on online pay-per-view at the Honor Takes Center Stage Night One event. He competed in a Four Corners match, which Homicide won.
Ciampa eventually prevailed against Homicide on two separate occasions, the first time on the second show of Honor Takes Center Stage and the second time during ROH Revolution: USA on May 6. Ciampa participated in the inaugural “Double Danger Scramble” match at ROH Revolution: Canada, which Michael Elgin won. Ciampa won the bout. Ring of Honor announced that Ciampaal with the promotion on July 13 of this year.

Ciampa won a Proving Ground Match against ROH World Television Champion Jay Lethal on January 21, 2012, at an ROH house event. As a result, Ciampa earned the opportunity to compete for the ROH World Television Championship in the future.
Ciampa and Jay Lethal’s fight for the ROH World Television Championship on March 4 at the 10th Anniversary Show finished in a fifteen-minute time limit draw. On March 31, at Showdown in the Sun, Ciampa resumed his rivalry with Lethal by interfering in Lethal’s match with Roderick Strong and causing Lethal to lose the championship due to his actions. Ciampa was victorious in the four-way final of the 2012 March Mayhem tournament on the Ring of Honor Wrestling episode on April 7. He bested Lethal, Adam Cole, and Mike Bennett to win the title.
At Border Wars on May 12, Ciampa’s perfect record ended when Lethal beat him in a singles match. Lethal was the one who won the bout. Ciampa was given another opportunity to win the ROH World Television Championship on June 24 at Best in the World 2012: Hostage Crisis. Still, Roderick Strong ultimately beat him in a three-way elimination match that included Jay Lethal due to interference by Prince Nana. The bout also featured Jay Lethal.
When that happened, Ciampa betrayed Nana, parted ways with The Embassy, and appointed R.D. Evans as his new manager. This came when it was discovered that Ciampa had made a deal with Truth Martini to keep the Television Championship on Strong. At the culmination of the rivalry between Ciampa and Lethal, which took place on August 11 at Boiling Point, Lethal prevailed over Ciampa in a bout decided by Two Out of Three Falls.
During the bout, Ciampa suffered a tear to his anterior cruciate ligament, preventing him from participating in any future in-ring activity. Ciampa said on September 7 that his injury needed surgery and would be out of action for a year. Ciampa appeared at the Final Battle 2012: Doomsday event, which took place on December 16. He aimed to get his hands on R.D. Evans, who had just won a bout against Prince Nana.
At the Border Wars 2013 event on May 4, Ciampa returned from his injury and immediately drove Evans and his new partner, Q.T. Marshall, out of the ring. Ciampa competed against Silas Young in the first round on August 3 to decide who would become the next ROH World Champion. Ciampa emerged victorious. After claiming victory against Michael Bennett on the 17th of August, Ciampa moved on to compete in the tournament’s semifinals.
At the eleventh installment of Death Before Dishonor, which took place on September 20, Ciampa was knocked out of the competition by Adam Cole. After defeating Matt Taven for the ROH World Television Championship on December 14, 2013, at Final Battle 2013, Ciampa started his first reign as ROH World Television Champion. The championship was defended by Ciampa against Taven and Jay Lethal in a three-way match the following month, and Ciampa emerged victorious.
At the 12th Anniversary Show, which took place in February 2014, he successfully defended his title against Hanson. At the eighth installment of Supercard of Honor, which took place on April 4, Ciampa could not defend his championship against Jay Lethal due to intervention by Truth Martini. Ciampa reappeared on July 19 after being out for an extended time, wearing a new appearance with increased muscular bulk and a thick beard that had not been trimmed.
After quickly defeating Adam Page of The Decade, he immediately followed it up with a promo that alluded to a heel turn by declaring that he felt underappreciated and desired a chance at the ROH World Championship. However, Silas Young cut him off in the middle of his promo. Following this, on August 9, he lost against Rocky Romero by disqualification because he did not release the Sicilian Stretch when the referee counted to five. This resulted in his loss to Rocky Romero.
