Tony Evans

Dr. Tony Evans is largely considered one of the most prominent people in American evangelicalism. By virtue of his extraordinary ability to communicate complex theological themes by way of imagery that are simple yet deep, he ministers to the body of Christ in his various positions as pastor, teacher, author, and speaker. Dr. Evans is often recognized as an engaging communicator because of the practical problems he constantly addresses.

Ministers of all experience levels look up to him as a model of pastoral leadership and a spiritual patriarch. He made history by being the first person of African descent to earn a doctorate from Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS). After finishing seminary, he became an associate professor in DTS’s Pastoral Ministries Department, where he taught seminars on evangelism, homiletics, and the history of the black church.

His service to DTS on the Board of Incorporated Members continues to this day. Dr. Evans has the unique distinction of being the only individual to serve as chaplain for the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA for the entirety of the team’s existence, the longest such tenure of any NBA chaplain in the league’s history. He also serves as the Dallas Cowboys’ team chaplain. Through the church he pastors and his national ministry, Dr. Evans promotes a doctrine known as the Kingdom agenda. This worldview illustrates how God rules over every sphere of existence, from the individual to the household to the church to the community. The spirituality of the Bible and social justice are both incorporated into this method.

Dr. Evans argues that the church, not the government, should be in charge of providing social services because it is more in touch with the needs of its community, has access to a larger pool of potential volunteers, can host outreach programs, and can serve as a moral and spiritual touchstone for its members. The religious community also provides the largest pool of potential volunteers.

Dr. Evans’ goal with the National Church Adopt-A-School Initiative, a ministry run by The Urban Alternative, is to educate churches, schools, and volunteers on both the theoretical underpinnings of this approach and the practical considerations involved in putting it into practice. For almost 35 years, Dr. Evans has been the lead pastor at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, where the congregation has grown from ten members and one ministry in 1976 to its current size and scope of over 9,000 and well over a hundred. Dr. Evans is also the head of a countrywide organization called The Urban Alternative, which operates on the assumption that the church is the best way for America to experience a spiritual renaissance. The Alternative with Dr. Tony Evans is a daily radio program broadcast in over 40 countries and on over 500 U.S. radio stations.

Dr. Evans has written many books and pamphlets, but “Oneness Embraced” (which is about his legacy) and “The Kingdom Agenda” (which is about his vision) stand out the most. Some of his most recent books include Kingdom Man, How Should Christians Vote, Marriage Matters, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, and Victory in Spiritual Warfare. Dr. Tony Evans and his wife Lois have dedicated the last 41 years of their lives to ministry. They have four children: Chrystal Hurst, Priscilla Shirer, Anthony, and Jonathan, all of whom are active in the ministry. The couple also has ten grandchildren: Karis, Jessica, Jackson, Jesse, III, Jerry, Jr., Kanaan, Jude, Joel, Kelsey, and Jonathan II. Their whole family is involved in the ministry.

Dr. Evans has received numerous accolades for his work, including “Father of the Year” from the Dallas Father of the Year Committee and the Marian Pfister Anschutz Award from the Family Research Center for his “dedication to protecting, nurturing, and strengthening the American family.” Both awards recognize Dr. Evans’ “dedication to safeguarding, nurturing, and strengthening the American family.” In 1973, when Tony Evans was just 24 years old, a radio show producer from Houston reached out to him (KHCB). This person had contacted Tony’s school, Dallas Theological Seminary, where he was a third-year student in the Th.M. program, and requested that they send him free copies of outstanding preaching material so that he might include it in his curriculum. Among Tony’s educators, he has many advocates. And so began Dr. Tony Evans’s frequent broadcasts on national radio and television.

For the next three years, Tony faithfully delivered his sermon in a makeshift studio on the school grounds, speaking into a microphone to an invisible audience in Houston. Dr. Evans’ radio broadcasts in Houston and Dallas resulted in a steady stream of requests for his lectures, so co-founder Mrs. Lois Evans began personally delivering the DVDs and CDs to eager listeners. Over a decade later, in 1981, this occurred. Established in 1981, The Urban Alternative is a veteran publication. Mrs. Evans used her economic acumen to plan for the extension of the ministry and to organize, expand, and improve its reach and development. Tony was asked to preach at the 1986 gathering of the National Religious Broadcasters. As a result, the ministry received a lot of positive feedback and encouragement to grow.

Dr. Evans’ radio program premiered on NRB affiliates not long after he started working there. While Dr. Lois Evans was Senior Vice President of TUA, the radio ministry grew in both scope and popularity. Because of her direction, we were able to achieve this success. Every week, millions of people around the world tune in to hear his lectures, which are broadcast on 1,400 radio stations in 130 different countries. Because of this, Tony’s impact has reached every corner of the planet. Dr. Tony Evans is largely considered one of the most prominent people in American evangelicalism. Dr. Evans is often recognized as an engaging communicator because of the practical problems he constantly addresses. Both new and seasoned ministers look up to him, with the former calling him a “pastor of pastors” and the latter a “father in the faith.” He earned the first doctorate from Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) by an African American student and went on to become an associate professor there, where he taught courses on evangelism, homiletics, and black church studies. In addition, he made history by becoming the first person of African descent to earn a PhD degree from DTS. His service to DTS on the Board of Incorporated Members continues to this day. Dr. Evans holds the distinction for the longest tenure of any NBA team chaplain, having served as chaplain for both the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Mavericks for nearly three decades.

Dr. Evans is the first African American to write and publish a full-length Bible commentary and a Study Bible. This honor continues to be bestowed upon him. Through his church and his national ministry, Dr. Evans advocates for a kingdom agenda. This worldview emphasizes God’s absolute sovereignty over every aspect of human existence. Dr. Evans proves his point by giving examples from the realms of the person, the family, the church, and the community.

At the heart of this vision is a strategy for bringing about social and spiritual development in local communities through the establishment of links between churches and schools. The Faith-Based Initiative, the first legislative accomplishment of former President George W. Bush’s administration, is often seen as a direct result of Dr. Evans’ church and school outreach strategy. Dr. Evans’ goal with the National Church Adopt-a-School Initiative, a ministry run under the umbrella of The Urban Alternative, is to educate churches, schools, and volunteers on both the theoretical underpinnings of this approach and the practical considerations involved in putting it into action.

Dr. Evans also leads a national organization called The Urban Alternative as its president. Through the preaching and implementation of God’s Word, our ministry seeks to restore hope and transform lives. This organization is led by Dr. Evans, who also holds the presidency. Listen to Dr. Tony Evans’s daily radio show, The Alternative, via the Tony Evans app or through podcast. Dr. Evans launched the Tony Evans Training Center in 2017 to provide everyone with access to high-quality, seminary-style education for a fraction of the cost.

The goal is to improve Bible knowledge not only among the general public but also among Christian leaders who may not have the resources or the time to pursue formal continuing education. Among Dr. Evans’s more than 150 books, booklets, and Bible studies, “Oneness Embraced” (his legacy work) and “The Kingdom Agenda” (his vision work) stand out as the most influential. Among his many popular books are Kingdom Man and Kingdom Woman, Prayers for Victory in Spiritual Warfare, and The Power of God’s Names.

The late 2019 passing of Dr. Evans’s wife and ministry partner of over half a century, Lois, marked the beginning of Dr. Evans’s new chapter without Lois. When Dr. Evans and Lois were married, Lois was a source of motivation for him. They are overjoyed to have four children of their own, thirteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
