Tony started playing guitar as a teenager, inspired by artists like Hank Marvin & the Shadows and was born on February 19, 1948, in Birmingham, England. Already a veteran of various blues-based rock bands by 1967, he helped form Polka Tulk (later Earth) with Terry “Geezer” Butler on bass, Bill Ward on drums, and John “Ozzy” Osbourne on vocals.

To his regret, Iommi accepted an enticing invitation to join Jethro Tull in 1968. Iommi left Tull to go back to his Earth friends after only one performance with them (mimicking the Rolling Stones’ unaired TV special “Rock & Roll Circus,” in which they performed the song “Song for Jeffrey”).
Since there was already a band touring England under the name “Earth,” Iommi and company were compelled to rebrand themselves, and they borrowed the English translation of the title of the legendary Italian horror film “I Tre Volti Della Paura” (Black Sabbath) for their new moniker.
The new name signaled a shift in the band’s musical orientation toward more gloomy lyrical themes and more ponderous, heavy music. By releasing groundbreaking albums like 1970’s debut and Paranoid, 1971’s Master of Reality, 1972’s Vol. 4, and 1973’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the band essentially invented heavy metal. These albums helped establish Black Sabbath as one of the most influential hard rock acts of all time.
The band’s unity began to break down in the mid-to-late-’70s as a result of Osbourne’s drug usage and extensive touring. He eventually left the group in 1979. Yet, with the addition of Ronnie James Dio (RIP) on vocals, fresh out of Rainbow, the Black Sabbath name was revived like the mythical bird from the ashes. Ronnie brought an innovative perspective to the table, and the resulting Heaven & Hell CD is a true work of art. This album featured a completely new sound for Black Sabbath. This album contributed to the 1980s’ resurgence of metal in general, and Black Sabbath specifically. Black Sabbath lost their drummer Bill Ward on the Heaven and Hell tour, but luckily Vinny Appice (then of Axis/Rick Derringer) filled in admirably. Two more albums (Mob Rules and Live Evil) were recorded with Ronnie and Vinny, but the Sabbath lineup would not remain unchanged for long.
Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice disbanded Black Sabbath, leaving Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Geoff Nicholls to reform the band. After going through a few lineup shifts already, the band decided they needed some continuity and persuaded Bill Ward to rejoin, while also beginning to look for a new singer. When it came time to record vocals for the album Born Again, they decided to enlist their old adversary from the ’70s, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple. The lineup wasn’t to stay the same, as Bill Ward bowed away from touring. Bev Bevan, a longtime pal from Birmingham and a former member of the rock band ELO, played drums for the Born Again Tour, which ran from the fall of 1983 until the spring of 1984.
In 1984, Black Sabbath lost Ian Gillan, who went to pursue a Deep Purple reunion and tried several times to work with new singers (Dave Donato, Ron Keel), but the results were unsuccessful (which again included Bill Ward). Thereafter, Geezer and Bill parted ways to explore other opportunities, leaving only Tony.
On July 13, 1985, the original members of Black Sabbath got back together for a concert in Philadelphia. This was so they could join a swarm of other musicians in Philadelphia and London for the Live Aid benefit event. Although pleasant, this was only a one-day get-together.
Not long after that, Tony began work on a solo record originally utilizing vocalist Jeff Fenholt and then using other folks including long-time chum Glenn Hughes on vocals, Eric Singer (Alice Cooper/Kiss) on drums, as well as others like Dave Spitz, as well as Sabbath mainstay Geoff Nicholls. Conflict arose between the artist and the record label as album production progressed.
Before the record label demanded a Black Sabbath album, Seventh Star was supposed to be Tony Iommi’s debut solo effort. It turns out that the Eternal Idol was a very turbulent period in Sabbath history. It was a long and winding road to completion for this album, which boasts two vocalists, two credited drummers, two bassists (three if you consider music videos), two producers, and two studios. The tours that supported The Eternal Idol stopped in countries like Greece (a first for Black Sabbath), South Africa, and Italy.
There was a mountain of management and record label issues, so the tour was cut short after only one year, and a fresh start was required the following year. For the first time since the band’s inception in 1969, Black Sabbath was not signed to their traditional record label. In the band’s history, this is the first time Tony Iommi has signed Black Sabbath to a different record label; he chose I.R.S.
Since the band’s roster had changed a lot in the preceding five years, Tony and then-singer Tony Martin set out to recruit some solid musicians in 1988 to stabilize the group. To play drums, we recruited our old pal Cozy Powell. Cozy has been asked to play drums on multiple occasions. Once in 1980, when Bill Ward left, once in 1983, when Vinny Appice left, and once more in the mid-to-late ’80s, during the Seventh Star era.
In 1988, Cozy gave in and joined the team. The Headless Cross album included the session work of Laurence Cottle, although Cottle was replaced by Neil Murray on tour and in subsequent performances. Black Sabbath’s lineup of Tony Iommi, Tony Martin, Neil Murray, Cozy Powell, and Geoff Nicholls was set in stone by this point in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Europe was a strong market for both the Headless Cross album and tour as well as the Tyr album and tour.
However, as the Tyr tour wound down, people began to reflect on the end of the Ronnie James Dio era. The Heaven & Hell / Mob Rules lineup of Black Sabbath got back together after a few meetings. Black Sabbath’s final gig of the tour was in Costa Mesa, California, where Ozzy Osbourne announced his retirement. This didn’t happen, of course, but the shows Black Sabbath played for Ozzy signaled the end of the Dio Era Mk II, as Rob Halford was called in at the last minute to fill in on vocals.
After the Costa Mesa gigs, the band started thinking about a new album, and with Dio out of the picture, they resigned Tony Martin. Since Cozy Powell was unable to participate, Bobby Rondinelli played drums on Cross Purposes. Once Bobby finished his globe tour, he left. The band brought in Bill Ward, a founding member of Black Sabbath, to play drums for their South American shows.
For 1995’s Forbidden, however, the band reverted to its original Headless Cross/Tyr lineup after yet another lineup shift. There was a tour in support of the album, but it was plagued by canceled gigs and other problems, and overall reception was worse than that of prior attempts. After the tour was over, Tony released a greatest hits CD from the “Tony Martin” era on I.R.S., effectively severing ties with the label. Used to pick on Ozzy Osbourne, who would later become a bandmate of his, when they were both students in Birmingham, England.
So this is why Ozzy got booted out of Black Sabbath. And so, Ozzy still holds onto the false belief that I was the sole reason he was let go from the company; in reality, it was the other two who were unhappy with his performance. But I also wasn’t overly fond of him.
Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath is one of two guitarists (the other being Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin) who can claim sole responsibility for creating heavy metal’s monumental riffs. Iommi carved out a dark, bluesy, and distinctive style as the primary composer, guitarist, and sole constant member of Black Sabbath, tuning his guitar a half-step down to accommodate a grisly finger injury.
With albums like “Paranoid” and “Master of Reality,” Sabbath had an unrivaled commercial run in the ’70s and essentially defined the heavy metal genre.
