The Carolina Hurricanes are a North Carolina-based American professional ice hockey team. The Hurricanes are a member of the NHL’s Eastern Conference and were Stanley Cup champions in 2006.

The Hartford Whalers of the World Hockey Association were the original members of the New England Whalers, which was founded in 1972 in Hartford, Connecticut (WHA). At that time, the Whalers’ most prominent addition was the 49-year-old Gordie Howe, who played for three seasons with his two sons before retiring in 1980. The Whalers were one of four teams accepted into the NHL following the WHA’s merger with the NHL in 1979 due to financial difficulties. Despite having a losing regular-season record, the Hartford Whalers made the playoffs in their debut season in the NHL as the Hartford Whalers.

For four seasons between their previous playoff appearance in 1980 and 1985–86, the Whalers finished last in the Atlantic Division. The selection of Ron Francis with the fourth overall pick in the 1981 NHL draught was a glimmer of hope amid this period of doom. As a result of his remarkable career, Francis was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame as the NHL’s all-time leading assist producer. He spent nearly 16 seasons with the team, split between Hartford and Carolina.

Between 1985–86 and 1991–92, Francis steered the Whalers to seven straight NHL playoff appearances, although the team fell in the first round in all but one of those years. The squad then went through a long stretch of bad play, dropping to the bottom of their division. As a result of the Whalers’ financial woes as well as an unsuccessful attempt to build a new arena in Hartford, the team was transferred to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1997 and given the new moniker Carolina Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes played their first two seasons at Greensboro, 120 kilometers west of Raleigh, as they awaited the development of a permanent stadium in the city. In their first season in the state, they continued the team’s losing record, but the next year, they won their first division title in 12 years. Three straight seasons saw the Hurricanes finish with a winning record, and they reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2001–02, where the Detroit Red Wings defeated them in five games.

The Hurricanes, led by teenage star Eric Staal and club captain Rod Brind’Amour, finished the 2005–06 season with the best record in franchise history, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup finals in seven games. After reaching the conference finals in 2008-09, the Hurricanes were absent from the postseason for nine years before making a comeback in 2018-19. (which ended in another conference finals loss).

Carolina Hurricanes Biography/Wiki

Known professionally as Gordon Howe, Gordie Howe led the Detroit Red Wings to four Stanley Cup titles (1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955) and seven consecutive first-place regular-season finishes (1949–55) over the course of a record 1,767 NHL games played over 32 seasons. He died on June 10, 2016, in Toledo, Ohio (25 of them with the Red Wings).  His style of play was remembered with the Gordie Howe hat trick, which included three goals, an assist, and a fight in one game.

Howe began playing hockey at the age of five and was immediately included in the Detroit Red Wings’ negotiating list when he went to the United States in 1944. Prior to joining the Red Wings in 1946, he signed with Omaha in 1945 and played one season there before signing with them. He quickly made a name for himself as a scorer who was also very competitive.

Howe was a key member of the Detroit Tigers’ early 1950s dominance as a member of the Production Line with teammates Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay. As a six-time winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy as well as the Art Ross Trophy as the top scorer (1951–54, 1957, and 1963), he set records in both categories. In the 1968–69 season, he scored 103 points, the most of his career.

Having resigned from hockey following the 1970–71 season to work in the front office of the Detroit Red Wings, Howe joined his sons Mark and Marty Howe in the fledgling World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1973–74 to skate with the Houston Aeros. This was his debut season and he led the Aeros to two straight WHA titles.

Howe spent four seasons with the Aeros before joining the World Hockey Association’s New England Whalers in 1977. It was the Hartford Whalers in 1979 that were taken into the NHL, and Gordie Howe played his final season (1979–80) with them, scoring 15 goals and providing 26 assists. Howe retired from the NHL in 1989 with 1,850 career points (a record he shared with Wayne Gretzky) and 801 goals (broken in 1994 by Gretzky). Howe had 975 goals and 1,383 assists in his professional hockey career (1,049 in the NHL).
