As he grew up in his hometown of Buffalo, a hockey arena was under building, and Patrick practised hard to refine his game. Before all this, his father, who supported Patrick on every step, mastered the basics of ice hockey. His dad used to lead him to the trials simply to foster his burgeoning passion and game skills. Patrick was still young to qualify for the majority of teams during the test, but it gave him a good chance to further demonstrate his strength among the older and better players.
At the age of 9, Patrick played in the Wheatfield Summer League and scored several goals. He did so effectively that other children’s parents were unsafe in leading managers to prevent Patrick from playing. This merely showed that Patrick was prepared to accept far greater adversaries.

Although the diminutive frame of Patrick was a reason for concern for his father, it turned out to be one of Patrick’s numerous talents when he performed on the field. He once played 300 games every year and at the age of 14, his professional career got off the ground.

He was recruited by the Honeybaked AAA Midget Team in Detroit and accepted the offer instantly. With the next three years, Patrick played for Honeybaked and left them at the age of 17. He was still in secondary school at the time and attended Detroit Country Day School. When he chose to choose between school and hockey, he selected the latter and left school. The choice was backed by his parents.

He was brilliantly excelling at the junior level year after year, thus it was obvious that he should be one of the leading decisions in the 2007 NHL draught. He was the best junior of the North American Prospects and was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks as the first overall. The official announcement took place in July 2007 and made his official NHL debut against the Minnesota Wilds in October 2007. His first NHL goal against Detroit Redwings was scored on October 6.
His dazzling performance during the first NHL season awarded him the Rookie of the Month in October 2007. On December 15th,

Blackhawks played against Buffalo Sabres on their home terrain, and while on the opposing squad Patrick was welcomed with applause. Blackhawks lost the game 1-3 and Patrick scored the only goal for the club. Patrick finished his debut NHL season with 72 points and was the top spot on the points.

In June 2018, he was awarded the best NHL rookie player with the Calder Memorial Trophy. When he arrived the game of Blackhawks improved dramatically while he scored a hat-trick in the second round of the 2009 playoffs against Vancouver Canucks. He led his team to qualify for the final of the Conference Cup, the first since 1995. But the team lost the final against Red Wings in Detroit.

As his contract with Blackhawks came to an end, for another five years he inked an agreement with them. Patrick collected 88 points in the 2009-10 season to finish ninth in the NHL standings. Blackhawks continued to perform as expected and achieved first place in the Central Division and second place in the Western Conference.

He won Philadelphia Flyers in the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs and secured his team their first Stanley Cup in 49 years. The goal made him the youngest player ever to win the Stanley Cup finals. Following this great achievement, he became his team’s alternate captain for the 2011 NHL All Stars Game.

He guided his club farther to the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals and Patrick was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for his exceptional performance at the end of the campaign. In July 2014, the management of Blackhawks announced that the contract for Patrick had been extended to eight more years. At the completion of the NHL season, Patrick ended the 2014-15 season as one of the top targets.

For the 2016 All-Star Games, Patrick was selected to be Captain of the Central Division Team. Patrick earned 100 points for the season in April and became the first Blackhawk player since the 1993-94 season to achieve the feat. He finished the season with a high of 106 points. He was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy for his performance.

His shape fluctuated in the playoffs at the Stanley Cup in 2017 and his club could not beyond the first round. Patrick ended his 800 career points in a January 2018 game against New York Islanders. He thus became the fifth player in the history of franchise to touch the milestone.

During the 2006 IIHF U18 Championship, Patrick competed for his national American team as part of his U18 team. He then played for the national U20 squad, which earned the 2007 World Juniors bronze medal. At the 2010 Olympic Games, he also represented his squad and led his team to capture the silver medal.
