Sidney Crosby, (born August 7, 1987, in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada), a Canadian ice hockey player, who in 2007 became the National Hockey League (NHLyoungest )’s captain and led the Pittsburgh Penguins to three Stanley Cups (2009, 2016, and 2017). Crosby, the son of a Montreal Canadiens goalkeeper, was able to skate at age three. He scored 72 goals and 90 goals in 57 games during his sophomore high school year in Faribault, Minnesota. This performance was brought to the notice of ice hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky, who believed that one day, Crosby might surmount his own records. In 2003, Quebec’s Junior Hockey League Major Team Rimouski Océanic designed Crosby, which scored 120 goals and counted 183 goals in 121 regular season matches over 2 years. He was awarded Canada’s top junior player every year. He also joined the National Junior Hockey Team of Canada and became the youngest player to score a national goal.

In 2005 the Penguins chose Crosby, 18, as the top choice in the NHL draught of that year. The youth who drew countless similarities with Gretzky (Crosby was dubbed “The Next One,” a pun on Gretzky’s appellation “The Great One”), expectations were high. Crosby became the youngest NHL player to achieve at least 100 points (goals plus help) in the first season (2005-06).The second season of Crosby saw him smash more records. He earned the Art Ross Trophy for 120 points in 79 games and became his youngest recipient. He was the youngest player ever to register for a 6-point game since Gretzky in 1980 and he was the second youngest player to receive the Hart Trophy, as NHL’s most valuable player ever (behind Gretzky again). In 2007, Crosby was named Captain of the Penguins and became NHL’s youngest captain. In the 2007-2008 season, Crosby led the Penguins to lead to the Stanley Cup final, however, the team lost to the Red Wings of Detroit in six matches. The following year, Crosby finished third in the NHL at 103 points; again, the Penguins advanced to the Red Wings finals, and this time in seven games they won the championship. In 2011, his career almost reached a premature end after a commotion in January. For the rest of the 2010–2011 NHL season Crosby lost, and speculation was expressed that complications of post-concussion could prohibit him from returning to hockey. Crosby resumed the lineup in November 2011 after a protracted rehabilitation but played just two weeks before he was again marginalized by a recurrence of concussion-like symptoms. He came back in March 2012. His highly publicized injuries resulted in further public discussions about the safety of players in the NHL — and agitation to improve them.

Crosby missed a broken jaw for 12 lockout games in the 2012–2013 NHL and yet managed to lead the league with a total of 1.56 points per game. However, in the conference finals, the best-seeded Penguins were swept out by the Boston Bruins, a series in which Crosby did not register a point. During his second career in the 2013–14 season, he won the Art Ross Trophy for leading the NHL in points (104), an accomplishment which secured him a second Hart Trophy. However, his post-season scoring difficulties persisted, as he achieved one goal and 8 assists in 13 playoff games, with the Penguins getting stunned in the semi-final conference. In 2014–15, Crosby scored 84 points, the lowest total of his career in an unabated season for injuries or workplace problems, yet still managed to lead the NHL with 1.09 points per game. Again, the Penguins had a deceptive season, though, when the talented club had barely qualified for the playoffs and were ousted easily in the first round.

Crosby helped the Penguins get back to the NHL’s highest tier in 2015-16, scored 85 points in the regular season. He subsequently scored 19 points in 24 post-season games, helping the Penguins to his captain’s second Stanley cup win and the Conn Smythe Trophy to be the most precious player of playoffs for his services. During the 2016–17 season, Crosby led the NHL in goals scored (44) while the Penguins posted the second highest in this league. In the next post-saison he helped Pittsburgh to move on to the Stanley Cup Finals when the team faced the Predators of Nashville. The Penguins defeated Predators in 6 games and Crosby, who scored eight goals and earned 19 points, won the Conn Smythe Trophy for a second time in a row. In the 2017–18 season, Crosby retained the Penguins among the top teams in the NHL, but Stanley Cup triumphs in the franchise ended with losses in the second round of the playoffs. In 2018–19 he played outstanding individually, scoring 100 points during the season, but in the first round of playoffs the Penguins were swept.

Crosby was a major player of the Canadian men’s hockey team at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, in addition to his achievements in the NHL. Canada claimed the gold medal when Crosby scored the overtime goal of the game in the final against the USA. In the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, he added a second Olympic gold medal.
