Wanda Sykes is an American actress and comedian who is most known for her performance as “Barbara Baran” in “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” She is widely recognized as one of the most hilarious American women. She may be a well-known comedian now, but she never considered that path while she was growing up. She aspired to go to college and get a good job because she grew up in a nice, middle-class neighborhood. She graduated from fictitious Hampton University and found work at the National Security Agency (NSA).

However, she found little enjoyment in her current position and decided to pursue a career in stand-up comedy instead. In order to follow her newfound passion, she relocated to New York City, where she eventually received her big break opening for Chris Rock at “Caroline’s Comedy Club.”

An important turning point in her life occurred when she met Chris Rock; she was subsequently hired to write for “The Chris Rock Show,” and she eventually received an “Emmy” for her work. She entered the film industry gradually, eventually landing major roles in comedies like “Down to Earth” and “Pootie Tang.” She is a vocal advocate for same-sex marriage and the rights of the LGBT community, and she herself is out as lesbian.

A daughter to Marion Louise and Harry Ellsworth Sykes, Wanda Yvette Sykes entered the world on March 7, 1964 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Her parents were both successful professionals; her father served as a colonel in the United States Army, and her mom worked in finance.

She completed her high school education at ‘Arundel High School’ before continuing on to ‘Hampton University,’ where she received her bachelor’s degree in marketing. She joined Alpha Kappa Alpha and was a member for a long time. After finishing college, she went to work at the “National Security Agency” (NSA) as a procurement officer. For five years, she served in this government position. Unfortunately, she wasn’t finding much fulfillment in her work at the moment.

In 1987, she performed stand-up comedy for the first time in front of a live audience at the ‘Coors Light Super Talent Showcase. She discovered her enthusiasm for comedy onstage. The subsequent years were spent in patient practice on her part. In 1992, she uprooted to Big Apple for the comedy scene.

In a comedy club called “Caroline’s,” she met Chris Rock, and later she got to perform with him. This led to her 1997 hiring on ‘The Chris Rock Show as a writer for the show. Their work together was successful, and she was invited to appear on Chris Rock’s show multiple times.

Starting in 2001, she was a regular on the improvised comedy series ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’ In the 2001 comedy picture “Pootie Tang,” she portrayed “Biggie Shorty,” opposite Chris Rock. The film is based on a sketch that originally aired on “The Chris Rock Show” In 2003, she starred in the Fox sitcom Wanda at Large for its first two seasons. Besides being the show’s host, she also made it. She played a politically active stand-up comic who gets a job as a correspondent on a news program.

In 2004, she portrayed herself on the show “Wanda Does It,” which followed the comic through a typical day. In 2004, she wrote a lighthearted book titled “Yeah, I said It.” There were jokes and rants about everything from sex to politics to family to crime to war to race in this book. As ‘Barb Baran,’ she appeared on ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine’ multiple times between 2006 and 2010, first in reoccurring roles and later as a series regular.

She provided the voice of “Bessy the Cow” in 36 episodes of “Back at the Barnyard” between 2007 and 2011. From November 2009 until May 2010, she presided over a Fox Channel chat show titled “The Wanda Sykes Show.” In the 2013 episode “What Animated Women Want,” she provided her voice for the role of a school counselor. Also in 2012, she lent her voice to the role of “Granny” in the CGI adventure film Ice Age: Continental Drift. She subsequently returned to the role in the 2016 sequel “Ice Age: Collision Course.”

Meanwhile, in 2017, she began providing the voice of Gregoria the Gargoyle on Disney Channel’s Vampirina: The Musical: A Haunted Halloween Animated Series.

She played the role of Janet in the 2019 romantic comedy film The Wedding Year, directed by Robert Luketic. She also appeared in “Jexi” that year, playing the role of “Denice.” Friendsgiving and ‘Breaking News in Yuba County are two of the next movies she’ll be in. She is most recognized for her portrayal as the protagonist’s hilarious best friend, “Barb Baran,” in the sitcom series “The New Adventures of Old Christine.”

Due to Wanda Sykes’s immense fame, the role of “Barb Baran” quickly rose from guest star status to regular cast member. Wanda Sykes began performing stand-up comedy in the ’80s. She has become a staple on Comedy Central and HBO because of her razor-sharp, cutting wit. She first gained prominence in 2003 as the star of the short-lived Fox TV series Wanda at Large, and then again in 2004 as the host of the groundbreaking Comedy Central series Wanda Does It. One of the more well-known female comedians, Sykes keeps herself busy with a book, a standup tour, and many films and television appearances.

Sykes attended Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia after graduating from Arundel High School in 1982, where she received a bachelor of science in marketing four years later in 1986. She joined the National Security Agency (NSA), the government’s top-secret communications and intelligence agency, right out of college and worked her way up to become a contract expert who oversaw the acquisition of espionage equipment. She delved headfirst into the bureaucratic red tape with her usual vigor and zeal, but quickly grew bored. In 1987, Sykes opted to participate in a local radio station’s talent event because comedy was one of the categories. She took the stage for the first time with a handful of jokes she had penned earlier at her desk.

In 1995, Sykes served as an opening act for Chris Rock, who was suitably pleased by her razor-sharp and caustic routine. Because of this, in 1997, when Rock started filming his own highly regarded HBO series, The Chris Rock Show, he invited Sykes to work on the show as a writer and performer. Sykes was nominated for three Primetime Emmys and won in 1999 for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Special.” For five years before its cancellation in 2002, Sykes polished her abilities on The Chris Rock Show.

While that was going on, she kept looking for new places to share her humor. Her no-holds-barred standup routine won her the American Comedy Award for “Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic” in 2001, the same year she made her Tonight Show debut with Jay Leno. She has also made guest appearances on shows including MADtv, Dr. Katz, and The Drew Carey Show. Sykes also starred in the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm, created by Larry David. She was cast as Larry David’s TV wife’s snarky, sometimes acerbic, neighbor and friend.

Sykes hosted a 12-episode season of Comedy Central’s standup series Premium Blend in 2002 and starred in a half-hour special titled “Comedy Central Presents Wanda Sykes” in 2003. In 2001, she appeared on The Downer Channel, a short-lived NBC sitcom that was quickly panned by critics and ignored by viewers. She also reprises her role as the voice of the show’s cranky phone calls on the Comedy Central show Crank Yankers.

An HBO producer hired Sykes on the spot as a correspondent for Inside the NFL after she was seen giving sportscaster Bob Costas a comedic appraisal at a post-shoot party. “I was fairly loud,” she told The Washington Post, “so he couldn’t help but hear me. Even though Bob Costas is a favorite of mine, after talking to him for half an hour, I realized that he knows everything there is to know about sports. He needs to shrug and change things up every once in a while. It’s safe to say that that would shock folks.” In his role as a correspondent, Sykes provides comedic quips and interview segments with comedic players.

In 1998 Sykes had a brief appearance in the independent film Tomorrow Night. Debuting in the major studio film arena with Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor II: The Klumps in 2000, she then co-starred with Chris Rock in the 2001 comedy flick Down to Earth. Also in the same year, Sykes played Biggie Shorty, the girlfriend of Lance Crouthers’s Pootie in the comedy Pootie Tang. The film, which was based on an SNL skit, was blasted by reviewers but found a small but dedicated audience, giving Sykes further exposure.

At some point, Sykes was given her own sitcom on Fox Television. Midseason replacement series Wanda at Large debuted on March 26, 2003, with Wanda Sykes (played by Wanda Sykes) and Phil Morris portraying a liberal and conservative radio talk show host and correspondent, respectively. Sykes was the show’s lead performer, creator, and showrunner.

Despite a summer break, the show’s new season premiered to low ratings, and by early November of 2003, it had been terminated due to a mere 3.8 million viewers.
