Well-known American meteorologist, author, and businessman Albert Lincoln Roker Jr. is better known as Al Roker. Not only does he provide accurate forecasts, but his easygoing tone makes him the most popular weather anchor on American television. When forecasting the weather, he usually adopts a laid-back demeanor, encouraging New Yorkers to take the day off on a beautiful spring day. His tone shifts, however, when he is following hurricanes or other catastrophic weather phenomena, demonstrating his command of meteorology on a national and regional scale.

Though he came from a working-class family, he decided to pursue meteorology in college and eventually became a weathercaster. After finishing college, he decided to pursue a profession in communications, and thanks to his impressive 80% accuracy rate, he was swiftly awarded the AMS Seal of Approval, the highest honor bestowed by the American Meteorological Society. He has been working as the ‘Today Show’ weather anchor for NBC ever since the show’s debut in 1996.

On August 20, 1954, in New York City, New York, USA, a young man named Albert Lincoln Roker Jr. His father, Albert Lincoln Roker, worked for the New York City Transit Authority as a bus driver and a labor relations negotiator. Isabel, his mother, stayed at home to raise him and the family.

He is the oldest of six children born to his parents, and his siblings include Christopher Roker and Alisa Smith. His family was blue collar, but they put a premium on their children’s education.

Alisa, Al’s older sister, recalls that he was a hilarious trickster who enjoyed creating model spaceships out of cardboard boxes. Little Al also enjoyed riding shotguns with his dad as the latter went about his day as a bus driver.

He attended Xavier High School, where he participated in the school’s Cartooning & Illustration Club. He attended this school from 1966 through 1972, during which time he honed his comic writing and illustration skills and discovered a passion for graphics.

After finishing up high school, Al enrolled in the State University of New York at Oswego to study visual communication. Along with this, he enrolled in meteorology courses to fulfill the university’s science requirement and found that he actually enjoyed learning about the weather. He never completed formal education in the field, though.

In 1974, he got a weekend job as a weather forecaster at the CBS station WHEN-TV while he was still in school (now WTVH). The next year, he was elevated to a weekday weathercaster. When he was a DJ at college radio station WNYO 88.9FM from 1973 to 1975, he frequently featured the music of the American trio AT40.

After graduating with a degree in communication in 1976, Al Roker relocated to Washington, DC, where he took a job as a weather anchor for the independent station WTTG-TV that same year. Soon after, he started looking at how other weather anchors did their jobs and figuring out how he might do it better.

Willard Scott, one of Roker’s favorite anchors at an NBC affiliate, noticed that at initially Roker relied on data when making meteorological predictions. When Scott finally pulled him aside and said, “Just be yourself,” he finally gave up. A lot longer in use, that is.

Following his stay at WTTG-TV until 1978, Rocker relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where he took a job as a weathercaster at NBC-owned and -operated station WKYC-TV. He stayed with the company until 1983, when he was given a position at WNBC-TV in New York City, the network’s most prominent affiliate.

When veteran weathercaster Dr. Frank Field left the network in August 1984, he was promoted from his position as the weekend weather anchor at WNBC-TV to that of the evening weathercaster. As of 1985, he was the station’s official weekly weather forecaster.

Soon after, he became NBC’s Sunrise regular fill-in for Joe Witte. In addition to that, he covered for more seasoned forecasters like Willard Scott (his hero), Bryant Gumbel, and Matt Lauer.

While maintaining his weather forecasting career, in 1994 Al Roker also established Al Roker Entertainment Inc., a multimedia company that provides a wide range of creative services. Since then, it has created a plethora of shows for broadcast, cable, digital, and online television.

He has hosted NBC’s broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade since 1995. On CNBC at the end of the same year, he launched a weekend discussion show titled The Al Roker Show. The next year, he became the host of a game program called Remember This? on MSNBC.

After Willard Scott’s early 1996 retirement from the ‘Today Show,’ Al Roker was well positioned to succeed him, taking over Scott’s regular weekday weather spot on January 26 and never relinquishing it. Soon after, he began doing interviews with passers-by outside, allowing them to appear on camera and thereby diversifying the program.

Don’t Make Me Stop This Car!: Adventures in Fatherhood was Al Roker’s debut book, released in the year 2000. It was number one on the New York Times bestseller list for several weeks. Next, in 2002, he released Al Roker’s Big Bad Book of Barbecue: 100 Easy Recipes for Barbecue and Grilling, which also became a best-seller.

He went on to write and release several additional books, several of which were murder mysteries. His twelfth book, You Look So Much Better In Person: True Stories of Absurdity and Success was released in July of 2020. Roker on the Road, his show on the Food Network, premiered in 2003.

In spite of his fame and busy schedule, Al Roker never stopped going out to report the weather from the scene, and Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was no exception. Strong wind knocked him off his feet as he went outside to photograph it, but he managed to recover.

On NBC in 2008, he presided over an episode of Celebrity Family Feud. He also hosted game shows like Game On TODAY later in his career (2016). Also, he co-hosted Today’s Take from November 12, 2012, till September 22, 2017, and he’ll be back in the same role in 2018. His primary interest, however, is still forecasting the weather.

His radio forecasts were broadcast on a wide variety of stations, and he hosted a live weekday morning show on The Weather Channel called Wake Up with Al from 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. From 2009 through 2015, the show was shown.

He has also made numerous cameo appearances on television from the year 1990. His acting career began with the 1990s Another World and ended with 2014’s Roy Cain episode of the criminal drama Blacklist (2020). In total, Al Roker has been married three times. However, he had a previous wife, about whom we know nothing. It wasn’t until 1984 that he wed his second wife, Alice Bell. They adopted a baby girl called Courtney in 1987. In addition, he gained a son named Gregory from this union. The couple eventually separated and divorced. Roker wed fellow journalist Deborah Roberts on September 16, 1995. They’re parents to Leila (born in 1998) and Nicholas (born in 2002).

As a student at Xavier High School, he was active in the Cartooning & Illustration Club. From 1966 through 1972, he was a student there, where he developed his talent for comic book storytelling and art.

Al completed high school and then went on to study visual communication at the State University of New York at Oswego. In addition, he signed up for meteorology courses to satisfy the university’s science requirement and discovered that he had a genuine interest in the subject. However, he never finished his coursework in a related academic discipline.

He began working as a weather forecaster for the CBS affiliate WHEN-TV on weekends in 1974 while he was still in college (now WTVH). In the following year, he was promoted to weekday weathercaster. From 1973 to 1975, he was a DJ at student radio station WNYO 88.9FM, where he frequently played songs by the American duo AT40.

Al Roker moved to Washington, DC, to work as a weather anchor for the independent station WTTG-TV after earning a degree in communication in 1976. Not long after, he began studying the techniques of veteran weather anchors in an effort to improve his own performance.

One of Roker’s favorite anchors at an NBC affiliate, Willard Scott, saw that at first, Roker used data to make weather predictions. Scott drew him aside and whispered, “Just be yourself,” and that was all it took for him to give up.

Rocker worked as a weathercaster at WTTG-TV until 1978, when he moved to Cleveland, Ohio to join the NBC affiliate WKYC-TV. He worked there until 1983, when he was promoted to head up the network’s most significant affiliate station in New York City, WNBC-TV.

After longtime meteorologist Dr. Frank Field left the network in August 1984, WNBC-TV elevated him from weekend to primetime weather anchor. In 1985, he was officially appointed as the station’s weekday weather expert.

He quickly replaced Joe Witte on NBC’s Sunrise on a regular basis after that. He also filled in for veteran weathercasters including Willard Scott (his idol), Bryant Gumbel, and Matt Lauer.

In 1994, Al Roker founded Al Roker Entertainment Inc., a multimedia company that offers a variety of creative services, while continuing his profession as a weather forecaster. It has since produced numerous programs for various forms of television, including traditional broadcast, cable, digital, and online platforms.
