American television journalist and novelist Tom Brokaw (born February 6, 1940, in Webster, South Dakota) is widely recognized as the face of NBC Nightly News from 1982 to 2004.
It was in 1962 that Brokaw earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science at USD. In 1965, he left his position as news editor at a TV station in Omaha, Nebraska to become the evening news anchor at a station in Atlanta, where he covered the civil rights movement for that station. Even as NBC’s television division grew steadily throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the network’s radio division stalled, eventually leading to the sale of the NBC Radio Network to Westwood One in 1987 and its eventual shutdown in 1999. Due to poor planning and execution by upper management, NBC started the 1980s as the third-ranked television network, far behind the leaders ABC and CBS. Fortunately, things turned around for the better when Grant Tinker became network chairman and Brandon Tartikoff took over as chief programmer at the turn of the decade.

Comcast Corporation agreed to purchase 51% of NBCUniversal from GE in 2009, and the transaction was finalized in January 2011. GE’s remaining stock was purchased by Comcast two years later.
