Allen Ezail Iverson ( born June 7, 1975) is a former professional basketball player in the United States who was known by the nicknames “The Answer” and “AI.” He played 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a shooting guard and point guard. Iverson was an 11-time NBA All-Star, the All-Star Game MVP in 2001 and 2005, and the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2001. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

Iverson attended Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia, where he was a dual-sport athlete. He was voted Associated Press High School Player of the Year in both football and basketball, and he won the Division 5 AAA Virginia state championship in both sports. Iverson was a two-year member of the Georgetown Hoyas’ basketball team, where he set the school record for career scoring average (22.9 points per game).

After two successful years at Georgetown University, Iverson declared candidacy for the 1996 NBA draught, and the Philadelphia 76ers selected him first overall. He was named NBA Rookie of the Year for the 1996–97 season. Iverson won the NBA scoring title four times in his career, in 1998–99, 2000–01, 2001–02, and 2004–05. Despite his small stature, he was one of the NBA’s most productive scorers (listed at 6 feet, 0 inches, or 183 centimeters). His regular-season scoring average of 26.7 points per game is sixth all-time in the NBA, while his playoff scoring average of 29.7 points per game trails only Michael Jordan. In the 2000–01 season, Iverson was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player and led his team to the NBA Finals. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, Iverson won a bronze medal for the United States.

Later in his NBA career, Iverson played for the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, and Memphis Grizzlies before finishing with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2009–10. He was named the sixth best NBA shooting guard of all time by ESPN in 2008.

Iverson was born in Hampton, Virginia, to Ann Iverson, a single 15-year-old mother, and was given his mother’s maiden name when his father Allen Broughton abandoned her.

During his formative years in Hampton, Iverson was given the nickname “Bubba Chuck.” A childhood acquaintance, Jaime Rogers, reported that Iverson was always on the lookout for the younger kids and that “he could teach anything.” Iverson’s father figure, Michael Freeman, was caught selling drugs in front of his son when he was 13 years old. Due to absence, Iverson fell out of eighth grade and wanted to leave the projects.

After spending four months in Newport News City Farm, a correctional facility in Newport News, Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder offered Iverson mercy, and the Virginia Court of Appeals overturned the conviction in 1995 owing to insufficient evidence. This incident and its impact on the community are examined in the documentary film No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson. Iverson’s high school basketball coach stated, “They wanted to make an example out of Iverson.” Iverson’s lawyer, James Elleson, stated, “The only defendants not awarded bond are capital murders.” Iverson’s release was aided by Tom Brokaw and the general public. Protests and marches were held in support of all four black men jailed, and Brokaw recorded a special interview with Iverson from the jail. In this programme, Iverson was repentant and sombre. Brokaw commented, “I think the penalty was pretty harsh.”

After two seasons at Georgetown, Iverson was selected first overall in the 1996 NBA draught by the Philadelphia 76ers. In a league dominated by bigger players, he was the smallest first overall pick ever, standing at 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m).

The Sixers won the #1 seed after finishing the season with a 56–26 record, the best in the Eastern Conference at the time. With 31.1 points per game, he set a new career best and won his second NBA scoring title. Iverson won the NBA steals title with 2.5 steals per game. At 6 feet and 165 pounds, Iverson was named NBA Most Valuable Player, making him the shortest and lightest player to win the award. He received 93 of the 124 first-place votes available. The series lasted seven games in all. The Sixers then defeated the Milwaukee Bucks in seven games to get to the 2001 NBA Finals, where they would meet Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal’s Los Angeles Lakers.
