Karl Anthony Malone (born July 24, 1963) is a retired professional basketball player from the United States. He is known as “the Mailman” and is regarded as one of the best power forwards in NBA history.

Malone played 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Utah Jazz, where he created a dangerous tandem with teammate John Stockton.

Malone attended Louisiana Tech University for his college basketball career. He lead the Bulldogs basketball team to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1984 and to first place in the Southland Conference in 1985 during his three seasons with Louisiana Tech. With the 13th overall choice in the 1985 NBA draught, he was selected by the Utah Jazz. Malone made the playoffs every season of his career, including the NBA Finals with the Jazz in 1997 and 1998. He finished his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he reached the 2004 NBA Finals for the third time. Malone again competed in the Summer Olympic Games for the United States in 1992 and 1996, winning gold medals in both years.

Malone joined the staff of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs basketball team in 2007 after retiring from the NBA, and in 2010 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice — for his individual career and as a member of the 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball team.

Shedrick Hay, Karl Malone’s father, was establishing a family with another lady he married until he committed suicide when Karl Malone was three years old; Malone first revealed his father’s suicide in 1994. Malone worked on the farm as a child, chopping trees, hunting, and fishing. From 1979 to 1981, he was the basketball coach at Summerfield High School, where he led his team to three consecutive Louisiana Class C championships.

The Utah Jazz selected Karl Malone with the 13th overall choice in the 1985 NBA draught. “If professional scouts had correctly projected Karl Malone’s effect on the NBA, Malone would have been taken considerably higher than 13th in the 1985 NBA Draft,” according to Malone’s official NBA biography. Malone was so confident that the Dallas Mavericks would pick him eighth overall that he had even rented an apartment in Dallas. Detlef Schrempf was chosen instead by the Mavericks. Malone averaged 14.9 points and 8.9 rebounds in his rookie season under head coach Frank Layden, and he was named to the 1986 NBA All-Rookie Team after finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting. The Utah Jazz defeated the Houston Rockets 105–102 on January 14, 1986, snapping the Rockets’ 20-game home winning streak. Malone scored 29 points in that game, including four free throws and a three-pointer by Pace Mannion, to help his team rally from a 96–89 hole to a 96–96 tie with 5 minutes and 36 seconds left. The Jazz made the playoffs for the third straight season, but were eliminated in the first round of the 1986 playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks. Malone raised his scoring average to 20 points per game in the four postseason games, but his shooting (49.6% field goals) and rebounding were still below standard (8.9). Malone led the Jazz in average scoring (21.7 points) and rebounding (10.4 rebounds) after his second season, and he was the game’s top scorer in 24 of 29 games between February 1 and April 3, 1987.

Malone returned to the NBA for one more season, this time with the Los Angeles Lakers in the hopes of winning a title. Gary Payton, an All-Star point guard, joined the Lakers in an attempt to win his first NBA championship, and the Lakers were considered favourites to win the title with Malone, Payton, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant. The Lakers started the season with an 18–3 record, but Malone suffered a knee injury against the Phoenix Suns on December 21, forcing him to miss 39 games. By the end of the season, Malone had returned, and the Lakers had clinched the second seed in the playoffs with 56 wins. Malone scored in double figures in four games in the first round against the Houston Rockets, including a 30-point, 13-rebound performance in the Lakers’ game 4 triumph. Despite not scoring more than 13 points in any game of the series, the Lakers moved to meet the San Antonio Spurs in the conference semifinals, where Malone played a vital role on defence against Tim Duncan. The Lakers advanced to the NBA Finals by defeating the Spurs in six games in the conference semifinals, then defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games in the conference finals. In the playoffs, he averaged 11.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, with two 17-point performances against Minnesota.

Malone’s number 32 was retired by the Utah Jazz on March 23, 2006, during a game against the Washington Wizards. In addition, a bronze statue of him was unveiled outside the EnergySolutions Arena beside teammate John Stockton, and a section of 100 South in Salt Lake City was renamed in his honour. The statues’ original position is at the junction of Stockton and Malone.
