Charlie Munger

American businessman, investor, former real estate attorney, and philanthropist Charles Thomas Munger. Warren Buffett’s corporation, Berkshire Hathaway, currently have him on staff as vice chairman. Mr. Munger is also active in a variety of nonprofits. Apparently, Buffett considers Munger to be one of his closest associates in the business world. Wesco Financial Corporation’s board chairman from 1984 until 2011, he served in that role.

Also, he is currently the chairman of the board of the Los Angeles-based Daily Journal Corporation and a member of the board of directors at Costco Wholesale. He spent his formative years in Nebraska, where he worked as a cashier at the local Buffett & Son grocery store. In addition to his time at Harvard, he attended the University of Michigan, the California Institute of Technology, and a few other top schools before deciding to pursue a career in law.

He fulfilled his duty to his country by serving in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. When he finally settled in California, he went to work for an established law firm before eventually striking out on his own. He worked as a lawyer for a while but eventually decided to switch to the field of real estate. Investor since the early 1960s, he is best known now for his partnership with Warren Buffett. It is estimated that he is worth $1.9 billion in the United States as of 2019.

Charlie Munger was born to the late Florence Munger and the late Alfred C. Munger. Charlie Munger entered the world on January 1, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. He started out in the grocery business helping out at Buffett & Son, which was run by Buffett’s grandfather. He then enrolled at the University of Michigan to pursue a degree in mathematics. The firm was founded by Buffett’s grandpa. At 19, he decided to forgo further schooling in favor of enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps sometime in early 1943. He was elevated to the rank of Second Lieutenant and given a commission despite the fact that he had not completed college.

In the years following his service in World War II, Munger attended Caltech in Pasadena, California, where he eventually settled. He earned a degree in meteorology. Although Munger continued his education at a number of institutions, taking a wide range of graduate-level classes, he was never awarded a bachelor’s degree. Inevitably, this hampered his application to Harvard Law School. He was eventually accepted to Harvard Law School thanks to the advocacy of Roscoe Pound, a former dean of the school and a friend of the Munger family. In 1948, he graduated at the top of his class from the J.D. program after excelling in every class he took.

Charlie Munger thinks that one of the most useful skills he acquired throughout his time in college and the military was the ability to play cards. In 1962, he joined the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP as a partner, and his practice area was real estate law. Wheeler, Munger & Company, an investment firm they founded with Jack Wheeler, was traded on the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange.

After losing 32% in 1973 and 31% in 1974, he was forced to close the business in 1976. He ran his own investment partnership between 1962 and 1975. Warren Buffet reported that Munger’s investment firm had compound yearly returns of 19.8 percent between 1962 and 1975 in his 1984 article titled “The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville.” The yearly appreciation rate for the Dow was 5%, so this is far higher.

Munger and Buffett were introduced to one other by a mutual friend at Johnny’s Cafe in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1959. Each of their spouses joined them for the lunch. They quickly bonded over the shared experience of having been hired by Buffett’s grandfather as teenagers to work in the family grocery store. Munger is older by six years, so the two men simply did not cross paths back then. Buffett and Munger have worked together at Berkshire Hathaway since 1978 when Munger was promoted to vice chairman.

He is commonly referred to as Buffett’s “right-hand guy” in interviews. He served as CEO and Chairman of Wesco Financial Corporation (now a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary) from 1984 to 2011. Actually, Buffett sees him as more of a partner in the business. Its principal areas of operation were in the insurance, furniture rental, and steel service industries, and its headquarters were located in Pasadena. He is also the chairman of Daily Journal Corporation and a director of Costco Wholesale Corporation, in addition to his position as vice-chairman of Berkshire Hathaway.

They had three kids, and they called them Wendy, Molly, and Teddy. Unfortunately, at the age of nine, Teddy lost his battle with leukemia and passed away. In 1956, Munger and Nancy Barry exchanged wedding vows. They stayed together till she passed away on February 6, 2010, and then they called it quits as a married couple. Their four children are named Charles T. Munger Jr., Emilie Munger Ogden, Barry A. Munger, and Philip R. Munger. As an addendum, Munger helped Barry raise her two sons from a previous marriage, William Harold Borthwick and David Borthwick.

Charlie Munger has been very helpful to his alma mater, the University of Michigan. In October 2014, he declared a $65 million donation to the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His tenure as a Harvard-Westlake School trustee spans four decades. He announced his plan to donate an extra $200,000,000 to the organization in March of 2016.

Everyone wants to know the secrets to long-term wealth accumulation through investment. Munger frequently makes use of the “inversion” strategy, which involves looking at one way to do something unfavorable in order to learn how to accomplish what you actually want to do. For instance, Munger says that people who “gamble in a casino” with their investments are unlikely to achieve financial success in the long run.

This may seem obvious, but it’s not always easy to be rational given the illogical world we live in and the emotional nature of human beings. The ability to be “reasonable” is consistently cited by Munger as a key to his and his client’s success in investing and in life more generally. “Seeing the world as it is, rather than the way you wish it is,” is how Munger describes logical thinking. Not seeing things as they really are, he explained, is like making an evaluation through a skewed lens.

Patience is a second attribute that is crucial for successful investment, since it is cited as the most significant component by Munger, Li, and even Warren Buffett (Trades, Portfolio). Munger has admitted in the past that he cannot predict the short-term movement of a stock. A stock’s value should rise if profits increase over a longer time frame. Even while some levels of patience can be taught, Munger maintains that innate qualities like patience are essential for successful investors.

A “long attention span” and the ability to focus on a single task for an extended period of time is a “huge advantage,” in Li’s opinion; he also considers focus and patience to be essential qualities in successful individuals. We ignore market hype at our peril. Our investment strategy is to find solid long-term holdings and to steadfastly keep them. Even legendary investor Benjamin Graham couldn’t explain why a cheap stock eventually rises to reflect its true worth. In a statement, Munger remarked, “Our attention is not directed toward market hype. For the most part, we are averse to change our investment strategy and instead focus on finding and holding strong long-term holdings.”

If you question him about the stock market, he’ll tell you that “in the short term, a stock market is a voting machine and in the long term, it’s a weighing machine.” Munger agreed, saying, “Some astute buyers will eventually take notice if you keep making improvements that increase the value of your product or service. Based on an equally weighted average of the Yield Curve, Current Market Valuation has found that valuation multiples are higher than they were historical.

The SPY is overvalued based on the Yield Curve, the Buffett Indicator, the Price-Earnings Ratio, and the S&P 500 Mean Reversion models. According to the Interest Rate model, it’s slightly overvalued, while the Margin Debt model puts it slightly undervalued. As a result, it seems likely that the market’s future returns will be mediocre at best.

The Interest Rate model predicts that rising interest rates will make the market appear overvalued in the near term, lending credence to the view that the market is overvalued at the present time. The effect of higher interest rates on asset prices is similar to that of gravity, bringing them down. Because of the Federal Reserve’s recent statements and the persistently rising inflation, this is likely to occur.
