Chicago Blackhawks picThe Chicago Blackhawks are a major league ice hockey team headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America. Until the league’s 1967 expansion, the Blackhawks were one of the “Original Six,” a group of teams that comprised the NHL. They have six Stanley Cup championships to their name.

A Chicago-based businessman named Frederic McLaughlin founded the team in 1926 after winning the NHL’s first expansion franchise for the United States and then purchasing the former Western Hockey League Portland Rosebuds as the team’s core. It was in Chicago Stadium, then the world’s largest indoor sporting stadium, that the team moved in 1929 and remained until 1994.

Before being renamed in 1986 to “Blackhawks,” the team was known as the Black Hawks and had some early success, winning the Stanley Cup in the seasons 1933–34 and 1937–38. To put it another way, they were able to win a second Stanley Cup in as many years after going 14–25 in the regular season, which was a league-worst record for a club that went on to win it all. In 1943–44, the Black Hawks made it back to the Stanley Cup Finals but lost to the Montreal Canadiens in four games. They went on to have one of the worst runs in franchise history, finishing last in the NHL standings in all but two of the seasons between 1946–47 and 1956–57.

During the 1960s, the Chicago Blackhawks enjoyed a golden era, going to three Stanley Cup finals and winning the franchise’s third championship with a come-from-behind victory over the Detroit Red Wings in the 1960–61 season. Tony Esposito, a goaltender acquired by the “Hawks” during the 1969–70 season, would go on to win 418 games for the team and be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Chicago Blackhawks Biography/Wiki

The 1969–70 season was also the start of the franchise’s second-longest playoff winning streak in NHL history: 28 straight play-off berths. However, throughout those 28 years, the team only made it to the Stanley Cup Finals three times, losing each time. No matter how many times they lost, the team’s playoff run had some memorable moments.

Mikita, Hull, Esposito, and Keith Magnuson all played on a Black Hawks team that lost the 1970–71 Stanley Cup final in seven games to the Canadiens, who went on to win the Stanley Cup four years later. Two years later, the Black Hawks made it back to the championship game but lost to the Montreal Canadians. In the 1970s, the squad won seven division championships. As a result of the 1985 playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers, Chicago fans began a tradition of booing during the national anthem so loudly that they drowned out the singer.

Ever since that time, all home games at Chicago Stadium and later the United Center have featured loud booing during the national anthem. As a result, in 1988, the Chicago Blackhawks acquired well-known players Jeremy Roenick and Ed Belfour, who led the team to the President’s Trophy in 1990–91 and the Stanley Cup finals in 1991–92 before losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in four games.

Through much of the first decade of the new century, the team struggled due to poor personnel selections made by Blackhawks ownership, which turned off a huge portion of its once-loyal fan base. According to many, despite the Blackhawks’ long history and apparent economic advantages of playing in a major city, they were among the weakest professional sports franchises in the league.

The Blackhawks returned to the playoffs in 2008–09 after a five-season absence thanks to a change in team management and shrewd personnel moves that brought in young talents like center Jonathan Toews and right wing Patrick Kane. The following season, the team went all the way to the Stanley Cup finals before losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to end a 49-year championship drought. After winning the Stanley Cup, the Chicago Blackhawks suffered a two-game losing streak in the playoffs.

After another lockout-shortened season, the team won the Presidents’ Trophy again in 2012–13 after going 24 games without a regulation loss to open the season, which was an NHL record. In the postseason, the Blackhawks made it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals, defeating the rival Red Wings in seven games of the conference semifinals after falling down three games to one. The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in spectacular fashion, defeating the Boston Bruins in six games.

As a result of three games going into overtime—including a triple-overtime game one—the Blackhawks were able to overcome a one-goal deficit and win game six with two goals in the closing 1:16 of the game. After trailing with just two minutes left in the deciding game, they rallied back to win the Stanley Cup in regulation time. It was a rematch of last year”s Stanley Cup Final against the Los Angeles Kings, and this time the Blackhawks made it to the conference final for the second straight year.
