The NHL team based in Dallas is called the Dallas Stars that competes in the Western Conference (NHL). They’ve gone all the way five times and only come out on top once in the Stanley Cup Finals (in 1981, 1991, 1999, 2000, and 2020). (1999).

The Minnesota North Stars, the team’s original name, debuted in 1967 and was situated in Bloomington, Minnesota, a city adjacent to Minneapolis. As it turned out, despite a losing record, the North Stars’ inaugural season was somewhat successful, as the team qualified for the postseason and went on to win their first-round series. As a result of a freak accident during a game in January 1968, centre Bill Masterton died. He was the first NHL player to lose his life due to an injury acquired while playing. The North Stars, led by right-wing Bill Goldsworthy, made the playoffs for four straight years (1969–70 to 1972–73), but after that, they went on a six-year losing run. The team went bankrupt by the late 1970s and was sold to the proprietors of the Cleveland Barons, another struggling NHL team, in 1978. The North Stars were formed by combining the two teams as part of a one-of-a-kind deal.

During the 1979–80 season, the North Stars had a winning record and made their first trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they were defeated by the New York Islanders in five games. Minnesota had five more seasons between 1981–82 and 1985–86 in which it qualified for the playoffs but did not advance past the conference finals thanks to the efforts of right-wing Dino Ciccarelli and centre Neal Broten. The squad went on to have seven straight losing seasons but made it to the postseason four times during that span. All but one postseason appearance since 1990–91 have seen the North Stars go out in the first round after falling to the Minnesota Wild. On their way to the finals, the North Stars (led by Broten and left-wing Brian Bellows) defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues, and Edmonton Oilers, the league’s two best records at the time, before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup winner Penguins. Though they made it to the championship game, Minnesota was plagued by financial problems as a result of their extended run of losing seasons. When Norm Green, the team’s owner, couldn’t come to an agreement on building an arena, he moved the team to Dallas in 1993.

Dallas Stars Biography/Wiki

After dropping the “North” from their name, the Stars had a mediocre start in Texas before going on to win the division five times in a row from 1996 to 2001. At centre Mike Modano and goaltender Ed Belfour in 1998–99, Dallas led the NHL with the best regular-season record, which was followed by a Stanley Cup final victory over Buffalo Sabres in six games to win the franchise’s first championship. The next season, the Stars made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before falling to the New Jersey Devils. Having missed the playoffs in 2001–02, the squad bounced back to make the postseason every year from 2002–03 through 2007–08, reaching the conference finals in 2007. (a loss to the eventual champion Detroit Red Wings).

After that, the Stars went on a four-year postseason drought, a franchise record. In 2013–14, Dallas made the playoffs once again but went out in the first round. The Stars, led by left-wing Jamie Benn, finished the 2015–16 season with the best record in the Western Conference, but the St. Louis Blues upset the Stars in a seven-game postseason series in the second round. After finishing fifth in their division in 2016–17, the Stars hired a new coach in the off-season to correct the team’s regression. In 2018–19, the Mavericks made the playoffs for the first time since the previous season but were ousted in the second round. In 2019–20, the Stars made another trip to the postseason, this time winning the Western Conference crown with three series victories. The Stars lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup finals, which lasted six games.

Hockey’s world professional championship trophy, awarded each year after a play-off round that concludes the NHL season. As the oldest trophy available to professional athletes in North America, the Stanley Cup dates back to the 1892–93 season. Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston, Canada’s governor-general, donated the cup, which bears his name.
