Ohio city and home to the professional baseball team known as The Cincinnati Reds. The Cincinnati Reds (NL) were created in 1882 and play in the National League (NL). Since 1919, they have won five World Series championships and nine National League championships.

An earlier Cincinnati-based team was a founding member of the NL in 1876, but was booted from the league in 1880 for playing on Sundays and permitting liquor to be served at their ballpark.

Despite the fact that Major League Baseball recognises 1882 as the founding year of the present Reds franchise, many Cincinnatians still consider the Reds to be the oldest baseball team in existence, and the Reds organisation itself includes these prior teams in the team’s history.

In their inaugural season, the Red Stockings topped the AA and won most of their eight seasons in the league. The team returned to the National League in 1890, the same year it changed its name to the “Reds.” Since the conclusion of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Cincinnati has never finished higher than third place in the National League (NL). Outfielder Edd Roush and pitcher Dolf Luque were instrumental in the team’s inaugural World Series appearance in 1919.

Eight Chicago White Sox players have been suspected of taking bribes to help the team win the World Series, tainting the Reds’ World Series victory (see Black Sox Scandal). Since then, Cincinnati has been a perennial bottom-feeder in the National League, with four successive last-place finishes from 1931 to 1934.

Johnny Vander Meer became the only pitcher in baseball history to throw two no-hitters in a row in 1938 when he pitched for the Reds. For the Reds, Ernie Lombardi was part of a core group of players that won the NL pennant in 1939 and 1940, as well as the World Series championship in 1940. It was towards the middle of this decade that the Reds once again found themselves in the bottom half of the National League standings.

From 1954 to 1959, the squad was known as the “Redlegs” as a result of the U.S. government’s fear of communism during the height of the Red Scare. In this era, Ted “Big Klu” Kluszewski, a power-hitting first baseman who notoriously ripped his uniform sleeves to unleash his massive biceps, was one of the few bright spots for the Reds. Since his debut in the minor levels in 1956 with Cincinnati, outfielder Frank Robinson has become one of baseball’s most recognisable figures. For a team that had just won a pennant in 1961 and lost in the World Series, Robinson was moved to the Baltimore Orioles for three minor-league players in what many consider to be one of the worst deals in baseball history.

Cincinnati Reds Biography/Wiki

Crosley Field had been replaced with Riverfront Stadium in the 1970s, and the “Big Red Machine” had taken over baseball with its unique left-field terrace. First-round losses in 1970 and 1972, and a shocker in the 1973 NL Championship Series, terminated the Machine’s first two trips to the World Series as they fell to Robinson’s Orioles and Oakland Athletics. For the first time in 35 years, the Cincinnati Reds triumphed in the World Series, winning 108 games and defeating the Boston Red Sox.

After winning six fewer regular season games than the 1975 Reds, the 1976 team led major league baseball in all of the major offensive statistical categories and swept both of the teams they faced in the playoffs, leading some baseball historians to claim that they were only the second-greatest team ever

Despite two second-place division finishes in the 1970s and a loss in the 1979 National League Championship Series, the Reds missed the postseason each year in the decade that followed. The team’s most famous event of the 1980s was Rose’s lifetime ban from baseball for wagering on the sport in 1989.

Despite a tumultuous 1989 season, the Reds won their division in 1990, the first time that had ever happened in the National League. They had never been out of first position during the entire season. The Reds won their fifth World Series with the help of rookie manager Lou Piniella, all-star shortstop Barry Larkin, and the “Nasty Boys” relief relievers.
