When MLS first began in 1995, the goal was to have 12 clubs by the spring of 1996 and then to expand to 12 teams by the end of 1998. It was started in June of 1994 that seven clubs would be formed: New Jersey (Giants Stadium), Long Island, New York (Long Island), and Washington DC/Columbus/San Jose. The league intended to own all of its teams. Originally, the New York club was scheduled to play at the Nassau Coliseum, where the Islanders play, and Columbus agreed to build an SSS for the 1999 season.
After a victorious World Cup in November 1994, MLS declared that it would not be ready for the Spring of 1995, which was the following year. For the spring of 1996, MLS would start with 10 clubs, but the Long Island team would not begin until later. Additional teams that day included Chicago and Tampa Bay, who were selected from a group that comprised Dallas, Denver; Detroit; Kansas City; Miami; San Diego; and Tulsa, Oklahoma. All 27 cities that submitted bids to host World Cup games included these locations.
It was revealed that investors would be able to take control of their franchises and administer them as they saw fit, rather than relying on the league. If they wanted to make personal decisions, they could select their own GMs and coaches, but the league would still retain ownership of the contracts for the players. The league received a $10 million investment from investor-operators.
SEVEN teams in Major League Soccer (MLS) were owned by investor-operators at the time of the league’s inception: the Los Angeles Galaxy, Denver Nuggets, New England Revolution, Columbus, New York/New Jersey Knicks and Washington Nationals. Marc Rapaport’s LA Soccer Partners, Metromedia Partners, Lamar Hunt and his son Clark, and Kevin Payne’s API soccer controlled New York/New Jersey, Kansas City and Columbus, and DC United. After the first announcement, AEG in Colorado and the Kraft Family in New England were invited in.
The Hunts had already purchased Dallas; the Kraft Group briefly had San Jose; and AEG invested not just in Colorado, but also in expansion Chicago, purchased Los Angeles, DC, and New York, and then took over San Jose after Kraft abandoned it.
Majority control of Major League Soccer at the time Don Garber was appointed in 1999 was largely due to a lack of other options. The Hunts and Anschutz have each reduced their ownership stakes to two teams apiece as a result of further expansion.
Before the debut in 1996, things had changed significantly. Teams from New York and New Jersey have formed the MetroStars. Dallas, Denver, and Kansas City were selected to fill the final three vacancies after Chicago was postponed for an undisclosed period of time. The initial names of the franchises were as follows: New York/NY MetroStars, New England Revolution, Tampa Bay Mutiny, Columbus Crew, Washington United, Colorado Rapids, Kansas City Wiz, San Jose Clash, Dallas Burn, and Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Empire Soccer Club was the original name of the NY/NJ bid. They were originally going to be referred to as the MetroFlash because they were owned by a group called Metromedia, but Nike decided to go with MetroStars. Here, Nike is going to start a pattern of bad-named clubs.
It was a priority for all teams to play on natural grass, even if the MetroStars were playing on synthetic turf when the Giants began preseason training. It was a college football or NFL stadium for every team to play in. $1.135 million, with $175,000 as the highest individual wage.
LA Galaxy Biography/Wiki
In 1998, Chicago’s MLS team, the Chicago Fire, was created, however, the name wasn’t originally intended to be the Fire. Nike intended to call them the Chicago Rhythm and use a spitting cobra emblem around a soccer ball similar to the one currently used by the United States National Team. There is no way that the Chicago Club will ever be referred to as the Rhythm.
The shootout was abolished in 2000, but there were still two five-minute overtimes before ties were called. The official time was now counted up to 90 instead of down, and the referee was designated as the official timekeeper (I imagine old MLS had a buzzer like a basketball or hockey). There are now three conferences in Major League Soccer (MLS).
In 2001, Don Garber persuaded MLS to sign contracts with Tampa Bay and Miami for expansion. First, AEG began selling off its six MLS clubs to Kroenke Sports Entertainment in 2003 when the Colorado Rapids were purchased by the Denver Nuggets and Avalanche and the Pepsi Center. As part of a 2004 agreement, Adidas was granted exclusive rights to equip all MLS teams and to sell MLS apparel. Youth development activities were also featured. Previously known as Project 40, this was renamed Generation Adidas under Nike.
Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA joined the MLS in 2005, bringing the total number of teams to 12. In 2005, the Kansas City Wizards were put up for sale, with a focus on finding a buyer with the financial resources to build a stadium specifically for soccer. The MetroStars were sold to Red Bull in 2006 by AEG. It began in 2007 with one new franchise, including San Jose in 2008 to replace AEG’s departed Quakes; MLS added two franchises in 2010.
A Designated Player rule that allowed teams to pay players out of pocket with only $400,000 on that player’s salary cap was also introduced in 2007 by MLS. The LA Galaxy signed David Beckham under the DP rule.
