In an interview he once claimed,

“I’ve always maintained that I’ve ever seen Britain’s radical rock ‘n’ roll singer. I was the only one who was not spitting, sweating, or sleeping. I haven’t done any drugs. I didn’t get drunk. I didn’t get drunk. I haven’t enjoyed soulless sex.” Actually, there’s no controversy or rumors about his life. His partnerships were always open and he resolved to stay a life-long bachelor. In the article below, know more about Richard’s life and profession.
Cliff was born as Harry Rodger Webb to Rodger Oscar Webb, who worked with the Indian Railways culinary service provider, and Dorothy Marie Dazely, a residential matron at La Martiniere Girls’ School in Lucknow.

After his family moved to Calcutta in 1945, he attended St. Thomas’s Church School in Howrah for primary school. The family migrated to Tilbury, Essex, England, in 1948 when India was independent.

They settled in Carshalton, Surrey before his father found work in ‘Thorn electronics’ in 1949 and brought his family to Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire. He attended the Junior Mixed Children’s School on Kings Road.

He subsequently attended Cheshunt Secondary Modern School, where he graduated in 1957. He started working for Atlas Lamps as a temporary clerk and his father handed him a guitar when he was 16. In 1957, before joining the Dick Teague Skiffle Group, he founded his own Quintones band.

He soon became the leading vocalist of rock and roll band ‘Drifters’ and in 1958, on his visit to Regal Ball Club in Ripley, Derbyshire took the stage name Cliff Richard. His track ‘Schoolboy Crush-Move It’ was an instant hit, landing at number 2 on the charts in Great Britain. He was invited to come up with ‘High-Class Baby’ and ‘Livin’ Lovin’ Doll’ between the end of 1958 and early 1959.

In 1965, he published his single “On My Word,” a major hit, and highlighted the UK charts again.

Another popular number ‘The Day I Met Marie’ was published in 1967, and featured in British music charts. In the same year, he took part in the movie Two a Penny, which plays the role of Jamie Hopkins, who is stuck in drug dealings.

In 1968, the band ‘The Shadows’ collapsed, although Richard continued to play popular singles. In 1973, he also made his farewell film show ‘Take Me High.’ This year, too, ‘The Shadows’ reassembled.

Until now, he hadn’t garnered much in the United States, and his fame was confined to only Britain. His record ‘I’m Nearly Famous’ was, however, an international hit by 1976, and his career re-established, which slowed down as the ‘Beatles’ came.

Another record was ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ in 1979, which sold 5,000,000 copies around the world. In 1980 Olivia Newton-John released a duet, ‘Suddenly,’ which peaked in the UK at no. 20.

He recorded Sarah Brightman’s duet ‘All I Ask of You’ with the legendary musical ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ in 1986. In 2002, the BBC’s “100 Greatest Britons” list, based on public votes, was 56th.In 2006, he was awarded Portuguese knighthood and designated ‘Commander of the Prince Henry Order.’

Richard remained a bachelor after he did not end up in marriage in one of his earlier relationships. When asked, he answered, “I had a couple of false alarms. I was in love, but marriage is a major commitment and being an artist takes a lot of time.”

He leads a busy life and only after the loss of his parents are his sister surviving family. He is an active member of a non-profit ‘Tearfund’ group that advocates homosexual marriage. This iconic British singer was one of the 30 000 individuals who protested in the Swedish sex education movie ‘Karlekens Sprak’ on Trafalgar Square, in London.

Cliff Richard was the biggest thing in British rock & roll in the years after Elvis Presley, but before the Beatles – and he had never been far off the top of the UK charts in the years after the Beatles. When he arrived in 1958, just several years after skiffle rocked Britain, Richard, with his 1958 debut single “Move It,” was the first English singer to imitate the hip-shaking revolt of American rock & roll. “Move it” kicked off an incredible fifteen decades’ worth of hits right out of the gate (as of 2014, his last time in the U.K. Top 10 was in 2008, when “Thank You for a Lifetime” went to number three).

The earlier albums, mostly recorded with the Shadows, were his most hard-rocking and certainly his most influential, which impressed almost the whole first generation of British rock and rollers. Like Presley, who surely was the primary influence on Richard, Cliff’s popularity has pushed him ever so gradually into a complete entertainer. He moved swiftly – the first one year after “Move It” – and the shadows tamed off their rock abilities, but after the Beatles opened the floodgates to homegrown British rock & roll, sending Richard to the rank of the elder generation, the genuine shift into the mainstream. He continued with hits in the sixties, even though he and the Shadows dissolved in 1968, but split his time between mainstream and Christian music; he focused on hosting variety shows on the BBC in the early seventies.

He made a big pop back in the late ’70s with 1976’s ‘Devil Woman’ which was his first Top 10 hit in the US and over the next five years, he racked up a number of soft intercontinental rock hits, including ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ of 1979, ‘Dreamin’ of 1980 and ‘Suddenly’ Olivia Newton-duet, John’s taking the soundtrack in the 1980s to Xanadu. This was his first and final appearance on American charts but he remained a UK institution in the 1980s, 90s, and 2000s, routinely featured on the top ten charts and on television, producing 100 full-length albums and, in 1995, becoming a Knight bachelor in the British Kingdom, proving his iconic stature.

Cliff Richard was born on 14 October 1940 to Harry Rodger Webb in Lucknow, India; he then belonged to the British Empire. His father, Rodger Oscar, worked for an Indian Railways and Webb family catering contractor in India until 1948 when the country got independence from Britain. As many adolescent guests of his day, Webb has relocated to a semi-detached house in Surrey’s London neighborhood of Carshalton thanks to the skiffle fad of 1956 and 1957.

In 1957, he created the Quintones and joined the Dick Teague Skiffle Group before joining a U.K. group named the Drifters which became prominent enough to get the attention of Harry Greatorex, manager. He proposed a name change – “Cliff” came from Greatorex, “Richard” came from guitarist and songwriter Drifters, Ian Samwell, who wrote “Move It” – and soon Cliff Richard and the Drifters became the band, doing more performances and signing a record contract. “Schoolboy Crush” was supposed to move as an A-side, but momentum was created for the raw B-side, and shortly, on UK single chart, the record has galloped to number two.
