Richard Chamberlain

Richard Chamberlain, known as the ‘King of the Miniseries,’ is an American actor who achieved stardom after he was seen in the titular character in the TV show, ‘Dr. Kildare.’ Its innocent appeal and beautiful appearance made it a 1960s ‘teen idol.’ He won the ‘Best Actor – Television Series Drama’ Golden Globe Award for the show. However, Dr. Kildare’s success made him scared of being typecast like ‘Prince Charming,’ so he constantly took up hard jobs to prove his mettle as a varied actor following the completion of ‘Dr. Kildare.’ Over five decades of his career, the renowned Chamberlain not only played in television and cinema but also worked in numerous stage concerts.

He appeared on American Broadway and the British theatre, and his audience was never unimpressed. He has also published his own music CDs, which have been featured in the United States and UK music charts. At No. 10 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100 Charts,’ his first single ‘Three Stars Will Shine Tonight’ appeared. In the last decade, he appeared in episodic roles in popular TV shows like “Desperate Housewives,” “Brothers & Sisters” and, most recently, “Twin Peaks.”

But Richard Chamberlain was a good track sportsman. He finished high school in Beverly Hills in 1952 and attended Pomona College. He studied painting and art history in college and graduated in arts in 1956. As a student, he became interested in the theatre and was honored for his portrait of Bluntschil in his successful stage drama “Arms and the Man.”

Shortly after Richard Chamberlain was released from the military, he traveled to Hollywood for a career in acting. He got acting training from Jeff Corey, the legendary acting guru. The Los Angeles Theater Group ‘Company of Angels’ was created together.

Chamberlain appeared little in various TV episodes during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Here he performed Lt. Dave Winslow’s role in an episode of ‘Riverboat.’ In shows like ‘Gunsmoke,’ ‘Mr. Lucky’ and ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents,’ ‘Rescue8,’ ‘Bourbon Street Beat,’ ‘Thriller,’ ‘Paradise Kid’ and many more he made minor appearances.

In 1961, his career witnessed a huge boost when he took the lead in Dr. Kildare’s medical TV show. Chamberlain looked every bit like a good-natured, friendly, and compassionate physician, who created him an envious female fan base overnight phenomenon.

He later recorded additional pop tracks that added to his burgeoning following. The title of “Three Stars Will Shine Tonight” in the Billboard Hot 100 Charts was his ‘Theme from Dr. Kildare.’

In an attempt to try something other than Dr. Kildare’s good picture, Chamberlain tried his hand in films. He was cast in the Twilight of Honor film in the courtroom in 1963. He has been the lawyer David Mitchell, who represents a guy accused of assassination.

In 1965 he appeared as the adapter of a novel with the same name in the movie ‘Joy in the morning.’ He played the part of Carl Brown, a law student.

Following the completion of Dr. Kildare, Chamberlain wanted to shatter his image of an “American Boy,” so that in summer stock performances like “West Side Story,” “Private Lives” and “The Philadelphia Story” he took a more serious story.

He rekindled his love of theatre and appeared at the ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s Musical on Broadway in 1966. But after four performances, the game proved to be the biggest debacle in his career.

It turned out that relocation to England was the turning point in his career. In 1968 he received awards for his portrayal in the adaption ‘Portrait of a Lady’ from the BBC. He then went on to play the character of David Danner in the drama film ‘Petulia,’ directed by Richard Lester. This was his first attempt at classical British theatre, which helped him to build a fresh image and strengthen his acting skills.

In the film adaptation ‘The Madwoman of Chaillot in 1969, he was placed opposite Katherine Hepburn. He was also chosen to portray ‘Hamlet’ in 1969 for which he was even voice coach. His efforts have paid off, and the critics and public have raved him for his superb representation.

In 1970 he took over the role of Hamlet for the ‘Hallmark Hall of Fame’ TV show. The film’s character as classical composer Tchaikowsky was expanded further by Chamberlain in ‘The Music Lovers’ in 1970 and the colorful Lord Byron in 1973 in the movie ‘Lady Caroline Lamb.’In “The Woman I Love,” he played the character of Edward VIII who retires from his chair because of his lady’s love, the American divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson.

In the 1980s Chamberlain appeared in various TV shows, such as ‘Shōgun’ and ‘The Thorn Birds.’ In 1988, in the television adaptation ‘The Bourne Identity,’ he also played Jason Bourne. Chamberlain appeared after 1990 in various famous TV shows such as “The Drew Carey Show,” “Will & Grace,” “Desperate Housewives” and “Leverage” and “Chuck.”

In 2012, he came back to theatre as Dr. Sloper in the playhouse ‘The Heiress’ in Pasadena. Richard Chamberlain’s sexuality was always secret. However, when he openly stated that in his memoirs he was gay, ‘Shattered Love,’ he came out of the closet in 2003.

In the movie ‘Joy in the morning,’ Richard Chamberlain sang the title song. He’s been on number 7 in TV Guide’s list of ‘TV’s 25 Top Teen Idols’ in 2005.He was Jason Bourne’s initial miniseries of ‘The Bourne Identity.’The multiple TV shows of Chamberlain earned Chamberlain his nickname, ‘King of the Miniseries.’

Chamberlain graduated from Beverly Hills High and attended Pomona College in Claremont, California. He studied painting and art history and took part in dramatic presentations for the students. During his senior year, he writes in his 2003 biography Shattered Love: “a life-changing breakthrough as a newbie actor.”

Sadly, fate compelled Chamberlain to shelve his goals of performing. During the Korean War, he was drawn into the U.S. Army. “I loathed being in the Armed Forces. I don’t like being ordered around. I appreciate not being ordered around. I don’t like to order people. I got out a sergeant. I came out. It was only another job for me,” Chamberlain told The Advocate subsequently.

Chamberlain started his run on Dr. Kildare in 1961. This special, loving doctor earned him a household celebrity and won him a 1963 Golden Globe Award. His good look of the leader also opened the way to other parts. Chamberlain was the star of the 1963 dramatic picture Twilight of Honor and the 1965 Joy in the Morning romance drama. Not shortly after Dr. Kildare finished in 1966, he traveled to England where he studied theatre.

In the 1970s, Chamberlain appeared with Michael York, Oliver Reed and Raquel Welch and The Towering Inferno (1974), Paul Newman and Steve McQueen in films such as The Three Musketeers (1973). He also worked constantly on TV, with the 1977 adaption of The Man in the Iron Mask and the Centennial miniseries. In 1980, Chamberlain played in Shogun, an English navigator, during the 1600s, in Japan. Shogun was a great smash with American audiences, based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. Chamberlain earned a further Golden Globe and was nominated for the Emmy Award for his work on miniseries.

With his next big TV effort, Chamberlain once again won over fans. He played a priest who struggled to uphold his vows because of the affection he has for a young woman in the 1980 ministry The Thorn Birds (played by Rachel Ward). Considered fairly risky for its time, the drama had viewers stabbed for several evenings on their television sets. Thorn Birds also received multiple awards including a Golden Globe victory and an Emmy Chamberlain Award nomination. He then played Jason Bourne in Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Identity TV adaption in 1988.

Chamberlain published his 2003 autobiography, Shattered Love, revealing his sexual orientation. He had disguised the fact that for most of his career he was gay and believed that the disclosure had adverse effects on his professional life. Chamberlain finally felt afraid to speak his truth, claiming “I’m no longer a romantic leader, therefore I don’t have to foster that public image anymore,” in a 2003 Dateline interview.

Chamberlain has been involved in an eclectic variety of projects in recent years. He performed in a tour of King Arthur in 2009, The Exorcist in Los Angeles with Brooke Shields, and the David Rabe’s Sticks And Bones starring Holly Hunter and Bill Pullman off-Broadway revival in 2014. Chamberlain has also played a role in the forthcoming revival of David Lynch’s famous Twin Peaks television series. Chamberlain also wrote a book of Hai poems, My Life in Haiku, in addition to his memoir, which was published in 2013.
