Bryan Lloyd Danielson (born May 22, 1981) is a professional wrestler from the United States who is best known for his tenure in WWE as Daniel Bryan.

Bryan has won the WWE Championship four times and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship once, as well as being a one-time United States Champion, one-time Intercontinental Champion, one-time WWE Tag Team Champion with Team Hell No, and one-time SmackDown Tag Team Champion (with Rowan). From July 18, 2016 through April 10, 2018, he was the SmackDown Money in the Bank winner in 2011, the 2013 Superstar of the Year Slammy Award winner, and the SmackDown General Manager. Bryan is the WWE’s 26th Triple Crown Champion and 15th Grand Slam Champion, having headlined multiple large pay-per-view events such as WrestleMania XXX and WrestleMania 37.

Danielson was previously signed to WWE, then known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), for an 18-month contract from 2000 to 2001, and continued to make unpaid appearances for the business until 2003. Danielson wrestled for different companies overseas under both his own name and the ring moniker American Dragon, which later became his nickname, prior to joining WWE for his third stint in 2009. Danielson “was largely considered as the best wrestler in the world before he got the call-up from WWE,” according to ESPN’s Grantland. He was a one-time ROH World Champion and one-time Pure Wrestling Champion for Ring of Honor (ROH) from 2002 to 2009, earning the title of “Founding Father” of the organisation. He was also a one-time ROH World Champion and one-time Pure Wrestling Champion, unifying the belts in 2006.

Danielson also competed in Japan, where he won the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship in Pro Wrestling Noah and the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (alongside Curry Man) (NJPW). He held a total of a dozen championships throughout WWE, ROH, and Japanese companies. On the independent circuit, Danielson won a number of titles, including two PWG World Championships, the FIP Heavyweight Championship, and the wXw World Heavyweight Championship. Bryan was ill or recovering from injuries from May 2014 to December 2014 and April 2015 to March 2018. Danielson left professional wrestling in February 2016 owing to medical difficulties stemming from many concussions and a brain lesion. Following the resumption of the brand extension in July, he was promoted to SmackDown General Manager. Bryan was cleared by physicians in March 2018 and returned to in-ring competition at WrestleMania 34. Later that November, he reclaimed the WWE Championship for the first time in four years.
Danielson chose to pursue a pro wrestling career during his sophomore year of high school and sought to train at Dean Malenko’s wrestling school in Florida. Malenko’s institution, however, had closed down by the time he graduated in 1999. Instead, he began training at the Texas Wrestling Academy (TWA) in San Antonio, Texas, under Rudy Gonzalez and veteran wrestler Shawn Michaels, as recommended by a friend. Danielson travelled Japan with Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling (FMW) after making his pro wrestling debut in December 1999, and he wrestled in multiple tag team fights with Lance Cade, a fellow TWA disciple. In March 2000, he and Spanky won the TWA Tag Team Championship, but two weeks later, they handed the titles back to Jeremy Sage and Ruben Cruz.

Danielson was signed to a developmental deal by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) to work in their developmental system while touring the country’s independent circuit. He was assigned to Memphis Championship Wrestling (MCW), where he gained exposure and was trained by WWF competitor William Regal, whom he credits with helping him develop his career.

During this time, he earned the nickname “American Dragon.” Danielson and Spanky won the MCW Light Heavyweight Championship and the MCW Tag Team Championship before the WWF cut ties with MCW in 2001. In July 2001, he was released from his WWF contract after 18 months with the organisation. During the 2001 Royal Rumble match, Danielson said in his 2015 book that he was on the verge of getting called up to the main roster: he explained that the WWF considered him as a vital character in the newly created cruiserweight division, which was influenced by World Championship Wrestling (WCW).
Aside from ROH, Danielson has fought in a variety of other independent promotions both in the United States and internationally. Danielson also travelled the United Kingdom in 2003 for All Star Wrestling, a British organisation (ASW). On May 6, while in the United Kingdom, Danielson defeated James Mason to win the World Heavy Middleweight Championship in an eight-man one-night tournament in Croydon. He worked for ASW, Frontier Wrestling Alliance (FWA), World Association of Wrestling (WAW), and Premier Promotions for the next six months in the United Kingdom. Over the next five years, he returned multiple times to work for various promotions. Danielson debuted in ROH’s sister company, Full Impact Pro (FIP), in February 2005 at New Dawn Rising, teaming up with Rocky Romero in a match against Austin Aries and Homicide. The following night, Danielson wrestled in a losing effort against CM Punk at Dangerous Intentions, sparking a brief feud between the two. Danielson’s most notable achievement was winning the FIP Heavyweight Championship in 2006, which he held for eleven months until losing to Roderick Strong. Danielson’s last bout for FIP was at Florida Rumble in December 2006, when he lost to Erick Stevens.
