Michael Gerard Tyson (born June 30, 1966) is a retired professional boxer from the United States who competed between 1985 and 2005. Tyson is regarded as one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time, having been dubbed “Iron Mike” and “Kid Dynamite” early in his career Tyson knocked out his first 19 opponents in professional fights, 12 of them in the first round. Tyson holds the record for being the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title, having won it at the age of 20 years, four months, and 22 days. He was the first and only heavyweight boxer to hold the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles at the same time, as well as the only heavyweight to unify all three titles in the same fight. When Tyson knocked out Michael Spinks in the opening round in 91 seconds the following year, he became the lineal champion. When Tyson was knocked out in the tenth round in 1990, he lost the titles to underdog Buster Douglas in one of the greatest upsets in boxing history.

Tyson was found guilty of rape in 1992 and sentenced to six years in prison, but was released after three years on parole. He fought a series of comeback fights after his release in 1995, reclaiming the WBA and WBC belts in 1996, joining Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Tim Witherspoon, Evander Holyfield, and George Foreman as the only men in boxing history to reclaim a heavyweight title after losing it. Tyson lost the WBA title against Evander Holyfield by eleventh round stoppage the same year he was stripped of the WBC title. Tyson was disqualified from their rematch in 1997 after biting Holyfield’s ears, with one bite infamously removing a part of his right ear. Tyson challenged Lennox Lewis for the world heavyweight title in 2002, but lost via knockout.

On March 6, 1985, in Albany, New York, Tyson made his professional debut as an 18-year-old. He won via TKO in the first round over Hector Mercedes. In his first professional year, he fought 15 times. Tyson won 26 of his first 28 fights by KO or TKO, with 16 of those victories coming in the first round. James Tillis, David Jaco, Jesse Ferguson, Mitch Green, and Marvis Frazier were among his journeyman and borderline contender opponents.

Tyson was dubbed the “next great heavyweight champion” because of his winning streak. D’Amato died in November 1985, early in Tyson’s professional career, and some feel that his death was the impetus for many of Tyson’s problems later in life.

Tyson’s issues outside the ring were also beginning to surface during this time. Don King and Bill Cayton were fighting about his future contract, and his marriage to Robin Givens was on the verge of dissolving. Tyson split with manager Bill Cayton in late 1988, and fired veteran trainer Kevin Rooney, who is credited with polishing Tyson’s skill after D’Amato’s death. Critics claimed that after Rooney’s departure, Tyson’s head movement and combo punches decreased. Tyson only fought twice in 1989, due to personal issues. In February, he fought Frank Bruno, a British boxer. Tyson was stunned by Bruno at the end of the first round, but Bruno was knocked out in the fifth. The following month, in July, Tyson knocked out Carl “The Truth” Williams in the first round.

On March 18, 1991, in Las Vegas, Tyson faced off against Donovan “Razor” Ruddock, the number two contender. Ruddock was regarded as one of the most dangerous heavyweights in the world, as well as one of the most powerful punchers. For the most of the bout, Tyson and Ruddock traded blows until referee Richard Steele controversially ended it in Tyson’s favour in the seventh round. The supporters were enraged by this judgement, which resulted in a post-fight brawl. The referee had to be taken out of the ring by a bodyguard.

Tyson’s driver, who corroborated Desiree Washington’s state of shock after the occurrence, provided partial support of Washington’s allegation. Washington’s physical condition was consistent with rape, according to an emergency department physician who examined him more than 24 hours after the incident.
