Earl Sweatshirt

Earl Sweatshirt, whose real name is Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, is a well-known American rapper and record producer. He was born in the United States. When he was just 16 years old, he published his debut mixtape, which was dubbed Earl and was released in the year 2010. The mixtape included explicit material and discussed violent topics such as rape and murder. Because of this, a lot of headlines were written about it. His music was first made available to the public via his Myspace profile, which he created before he became famous. “Tyler the Creator” was the one who came across him. Before he went to boarding school, he was also a member of the hip hop group known as “Odd Future,” which was founded by Tyler the Creator. As a direct consequence of this, he was unable to create any new music for close to two years.

He finished his time at the boarding school and then came back to the collective in order to continue making music. The year 2013 saw the release of his first studio album, named “Doris,” which was met with praise from music critics. Earl Sweatshirt’s second studio album, titled “I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside: An Album by Earl Sweatshirt,” was released in 2015, and it was met with highly positive reviews from music reviewers as well as enthusiastic responses from Earl Sweatshirt’s devoted fanbase. In addition to having his own independent label called Tan Cressida, he is now affiliated with the record company Columbia Records. In the city of Chicago, Illinois, Thebe Neruda Kgositsile was born on February 24th, 1994. His mother, Cheryl Harris, is a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his father, Keorapetse Kgositsile, is a South African poet and political activist. He was born in South Africa.

The young Thebe saw his parents’ breakup when he was just eight years old. In 2018, his father passed away after a brief battle with sickness. Both the “UCLA Lab School” in Los Angeles and the “New Roads High School” in Santa Monica were among Thebe’s previous educational institutions. When he was only eight years old, he started his career as a rap artist. Through his Myspace account, he began composing music in 2008, and that same year, he uploaded his first collection of tunes. The songs were originally included on his first mixtape, which was named “Kitchen Cutlery.” It was under the moniker “Sly Tendencies” that he distributed his musical works. The name “The Backpackers” was given to the group that he and his two other close pals, Loof and Jaw Mojo, created together.

The group had discussed the possibility of putting out a mixtape under the name “World Playground,” but they eventually broke up and proceeded in different directions. That was only the beginning of a long and successful rapping career for Thebe, when he was just a kid. “Tyler the Creator” was the one who uncovered him in 2009, and he was the one who encouraged “Sly Tendencies” to become a member of his hip hop group “Odd Future.” After listening to some of ‘Syl’s songs on another user’s Myspace channel, Tyler decided to contact him. After becoming a member of the band “Odd Future,” he decided to alter his name to Earl Sweatshirt. In addition, he was highlighted in publications like as “Spin,” “Billboard,” and “The Fader,” amongst others. At the age of sixteen, in the year 2010, he put out his very first official mixtape, which he dubbed Earl and which was a self-released record. Earl was forced to take some time off from recording songs with “Odd Future” despite the group’s widespread popularity.

Because it had a lot of explicit material, his mixtape quickly became one of the most difficult videos to watch. It is quite likely that this was one of the primary motivating factors for his mother’s decision to disallow Earl to be connected with the group ‘Odd Future.’ She coerced him into attending Coral Reef Academy, a rehabilitative retreat school located in Samoa. Earl asserted in an interview that he was exiled to Samoa due to the fact that he had gotten into trouble with a few of his close friends. Earl read the biography on “Malcolm X” written by Manning Marable as well as works of counterculture fiction written by Richard Farina while he was a student. In addition to that, he penned the lyrics to the song “Oldie,” which served as his sole contribution to “The OF Tape Vol. 2.”

While Earl was away at boarding school, the members of “Odd Future” were busy making headlines all over the world and working on transitioning into hip hop. The members of the collective also kept shouting “Free Earl” throughout the entire incident. In 2011, Sweatshirt made three previously unreleased songs available to the public via the mixtape titled “Odd Future.” In February of 2012, rumours began to circulate regarding Sweatshirt’s possible return to the United States. A ‘YouTube’ video was released that teased new music from Earl. 50,000 more followers demanded on Earl’s ‘Twitter’ handle for the full release of his new music, and the work was done in three hours.

‘Home,’ a minute-and-a-half track was released that ended with ‘and I am back, Bye.’ Fans were assured that their favourite rapper was preparing for his comeback. In 2012, he got featured in a lot of places. He officially returned to ‘Odd Future’ when he was featured in ‘Oldie,’ his track in the ‘OF’s debut album ‘The OF Tape, Vol.2.’ On November 2, he released his first solo single since his return from Samoa. The single was titled ‘Chum.’ On August 20, 2013, he released his debut studio album titled ‘Doris’ under ‘Tan Cressida,’ his own imprint, and ‘Columbia Records.’ His debut album received wide spread critical acclaim by newspapers such as ‘The Guardian’ and ‘Los Angeles Times.’

It debuted at number 5 on the ‘USA Billboard 200’ and became number one on ‘US Top Rap Albums’ chart. In 2014, he released various songs such as ’45,’ ‘Quest/Power,’ ‘Vultures,’ and ‘Hell.’ On March 22, 2015, Earl’s second studio album titled ‘I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside: An Album by Earl Sweatshirt’ was released digitally. The physical version was released on April 14, 2015. In 2016, he released various singles such as ‘Wind in My Sails,’ ‘Sort Sort, ‘Barry,’ ‘Death Whistles,’ and ‘Pellicular.’ His newest appearance comes on the tune ‘E Coli’ by ‘The Alchemist’s EP ‘Bread’ in 2018. In 2011, he was named as a probable contender for ‘XXL’s 2012 Freshmen List.’ In 2013, he won ‘Breaking Woodie’ at the ‘MTVU Woodie Awards.’

He was also nominated as a feature artists for ‘Channel Orange’ at the ‘2013 Grammy Awards.’ Earl finally negotiated a solo contract with Columbia, allowing him to publish work on the major label under the vanity imprint Tan Cressida, and in November 2012, he launched the long-term relationship with the single “Chum.” The singles “Whoa” and “Hive,” the former of which became Earl’s first charting solo hit and peaked at number 46 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, were the two tracks that ultimately led to the release of Doris in August of 2013. Despite the fact that Earl created a significant portion of the set, the album debuted at position number five on the Billboard 200 chart. It was improved with contributions from a large number of OF colleagues, including the Neptune’s, Frank Ocean, and the RZA. It was ranked highly by Rolling Stone and The Wire, both of which published year-end lists of the finest albums they had listened to during the year.

Earl came back in March 2015 with I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, an album that was barely half an hour long but was recognised as a huge follow-up for its beautifully insular character. This album came after a number of collaborations that Earl had participated in. Earl was responsible for the production of all but one of the songs on the album, which peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200. Between his solo albums, he appeared on a few songs, one of which being Danny Brown’s “Really Doe,” and he extended his production repertoire by adding a number of one-offs, in addition to his substantial work with Mach-Hommy and Denmark Vessey. Danny Brown’s “Really Doe” was one of the tracks. Some Rap Songs was Earl’s third studio album to be released under Columbia, and it was released in November of 2018. After the passing of his father, South African poet and activist Keorapetse Kgositsile, the album was released (aka Bra Willie). He came back in a very short amount of time in late 2019 with an EP including seven songs titled Feet of Clay. The compact compilation included cameos from Mavi, Mach-Hommy, and Liv.E. among its participants.

Two years later, in 2012, Earl released the introspective single “2010,” which was the first track from his fourth studio album Sick! to be made available before the album’s release. The ten-song collection was released in January 2022, and it included guest performances by prominent musicians Armand Hammer and Elopers. Additionally, the production of the collection was handled by a variety of sound sculptors, including Navy Blue, Black Noise, Alexander Spit, and others. Sick! had a runtime of under 24 minutes and maintained the futuristic, sometimes chaotic instrumental style of the two Earl albums that came directly before it. The album’s title comes from the word “sick,” which refers to the band’s nickname. Earl, his first mixtape, was made available for free digital download on the Odd Future website on March 31, 2010, the same day it was self-released. The majority of the production for the mixtape was handled by Tyler, The Creator. The music publication Complex ranked Earl as the 24th greatest album of 2010.

In spite of great responses from both critics and fans, it was reported by a number of publications that Sweatshirt had quit recording music with Odd Future. Despite the fact that Earl later stated in an interview that his mother sent him to Samoa because he was getting into trouble with friends, posts from Tyler, The Creator’s Twitter and Form spring accounts appeared to indicate that Sweatshirt’s mother would not grant permission to release any of Sweatshirt’s music. Outside of Apia, the capital city of Samoa, there is a therapeutic retreat school for troubled young men known as Coral Reef Academy. Earl attended this institution. While attending Coral Reef Academy, Earl fought hard to regain his rights and to win the chance to go back home. At the beginning of his enrollment, he was not permitted to use the restroom without being accompanied by an adult. While he was there, he read the biography of Malcolm X written by Manning Marable and the counterculture fiction written by Richard Farinas. He composed songs with rhymes, the majority of which can be found on the track “Oldie,” which was his only contribution to The OF Tape Vol. 2. Leila Steinberg, who was Tupac Shakur’s original manager and still oversees his career to this day, travelled all the way to Samoa to bring Earl back with her.

On December 1, 2011, the mixtape titled “Odd Future Unreleased” by OddFutureTalk was released, and on it were three tracks that had never been published before by Sweatshirt. The possibility of Sweatshirt being included on XXL’s 2012 Freshmen List was made public in the month of December 2011. When a video of Sweatshirt surfaced on YouTube on February 8, 2012, it included a preview of a new song and stated that viewers would need to give him 50,000 followers on Twitter in order to hear “the full thing.” This led to widespread speculation on the internet that Sweatshirt had relocated back to the United States. Later, he also stated that he had returned to his residence in Los Angeles on the brand new Twitter account that he had created.

Earl had a guest appearance on the track “Oldie,” which was included on Odd Future’s first studio album, The OF Tape Vol. 2. This was Earl’s debut appearance on an Odd Future Records record as well as his comeback to official Odd Future releases in general. Earl was featured in a cypher-style music video on March 20 that was uploaded to the official Odd Future YouTube website. The video featured Earl rapping together with the other members of the group to his verse from the song “Oldie.” On the same day, March 20, 2012, Earl had a performance with the band at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Mixtape named Customized Greatly Vol. 3 was published on April 9, 2012 by rap artist Casey Veggies. The mixtape included a song with Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, and Tyler the Creator as featured artists.

“PNCINTLOFWGKTA” is the name of a collaboration between Domo Genesis, Hedgy Beats, and Tyler, The Creator. During the course of that month, Earl Sweatshirt agreed to establish his own record label imprint, titled Tan Cressida, which would be distributed by Columbia Records. Because staying connected to Odd Future was his first objective, he turned down a number of other offers that were more lucrative. Frank Ocean’s first studio album, titled channel ORANGE, was made available digitally on July 10, 2012, and the song “Super Rich Kids” included Earl Sweatshirt as a guest artist. The first official single from Domo Genesis and The Alchemist’s collaborative album No Idols, titled “Elimination Chamber,” was released on July 16. The track features contributions from Sweatshirt, Vince Staples, and Action Bronson.

Later on, he was featured on the album once again, this time on the songs “Daily News” and “Gamebreaker,” which also included appearances by SpaceGhostPurpp and Action Bronson. The song “Between Friends” was published by Flying Lotus on the Adult Swim Single series on July 23, 2012, and it includes Earl Sweatshirt and Captain Murphy. In addition, Earl Sweatshirt was featured on the single “P2” that was included on Hedgy Beats and Left Brain’s second and last studio album as Mellow Hype, titled Numbers. “Chum” was the title of Earl’s first solo single after he returned from Samoa on November 2, 2012, and it was published by him. On November 12, he revealed in a tweet that the title of his first studio album would be Cnossos. However, he ultimately opted against using that name for the album.

Earl made the announcement on December 4, 2012 that the album would now be titled Doris instead. The music video for “Chum” was uploaded on YouTube the same day it was released. Early rumours suggested that Tyler, The Creator, Frank Ocean, Omasa Keith, Thunderclap, Domo Genesis, Mac Miller, The Neptune’s, Christian Rich, Vince Staples, BadBadNotGood, Pharrell Williams, Sami yam, The Alchemist, Casey Veggies, The Internet (Syd and Matt Martians), and RZA contributed vocals and/or production to Doris. Earl debuted three new songs from the album Doris on March 6, 2013, while performing alongside Flying Lotus and Mac Miller. The songs were “Burgundy,” “Hive,” and “Guild,” all of which featured Mac Miller. “Burgundy” was produced by Pharrell Williams, and “Hive” featured Casey Veggies and Vince Staples.

Earl also stated that the name of his next song would be “Whoa,” and that it will include Tyler, The Creator. The music video for the song, which was directed by Tyler and premiered with the single’s release on iTunes on March 12, 2013, was also directed by Tyler. On August 20, 2013, Doris was made available for purchase via Tan Cressida and Columbia Records. On the album Doris, members of Odd Future such as Domo Genesis, Frank Ocean, and Tyler, The Creator, as well as other artists like as Vince Staples, RZA, Casey Veggies, and Mac Miller, made guest appearances. Sweatshirt, operating under the alias randomblackdude, and the production team Christian Rich were mostly responsible for the album’s production. Matt Martians, The Neptune’s, RZA, Sami yam, BadBadNotGood, Frank Ocean, and Tyler, The Creator all contributed additional production to the album. The music publication Complex ranked Sweatshirt as the eighth greatest hip hop producer that year (September 2013).

The album Doris was hailed with widespread critical acclaim from music journalists at its first release. This included perfect scores from The Guardian and the Los Angeles Times, both of which commended Sweatshirt’s rhyme schemes and lyrics in addition to the gritty underground production on the album. Both critically and financially, the album was a success, making its debut at number five on the US Billboard 200 and at number one on the US Top Rap Albums list.
