Michael Mcdonald

American singer-songwriter Michael McDonald is very talented in his field. Over the course of four decades, he has built a solid reputation as a musician, composer, keyboardist, and record producer. Over the course of his career, he has recorded duets or contributed backup vocals with a number of well-known artists, including Toto, Patti LaBelle, and Grizzly Bear. His unique voice first gained attention when he joined Steely Dan as a guest vocalist in the early 1970s. His most well-known group is perhaps The Doobie Brothers, whose style he helped evolve from boogie-rock to a blend of soul-jazz and pop.

His solo career has been fruitful, earning him many awards and recognition (including a Grammy). He has also written and performed many songs for television. Right now, he is easily one of the most famous and recognisable singers to come out of the California rock/pop scene of the 1970s. His rich, soulful baritone skillfully bridged the gap between sugary-sweet rock and blue-eyed soul. His discovery is largely responsible for his meteoric rise to fame as a cultural icon and music industry titan.

Michael McDonald was born to Irish American Catholic parents on February 12, 1952, in Ferguson, Missouri. His first band, Mike and the Majestics, performed at his high school, McCluer. With addition, he played in the local bands the Reebtoors, Jerry Jay and the Sheratons, and the Guild. McDonald’s moved to Los Angeles in 1970 to pursue a career in the music industry.

Michael McDonald got his start in the industry as a session musician and vocalist. His career with Steely Dan began in 1974, when the band hired him as a studio musician. He sang and played keyboards on Steely Dan albums. He joined forces with the Doobie Brothers in April of 1975. At first, he was asked to sub for sick lead singer Tom Johnston. In addition to Toto and Christopher Cross and Bonnie Raitt and Jack Jones and Kenny Loggins, his contemporaries who he has collaborated with on songs and albums include Bonnie Raitt, Jack Jones, and Kenny Loggins.

Later that year, McDonald provided backing vocals for Toto on their album Fahrenheit. The gospel group “The Winans” used him on their 1987 album “Love Has No Color,” which he also sang on. Later in 1990, he published an album on which Michael Mcdonald  contributed to the songwriting.

In 1992, he got Walter Becker and Donald Fagen from the band Steely Dan together to launch the New York Rock & Soul Revue. In 1995, he briefly rejoined the Doobie Brothers for a tour. Soon after, he joined Stevie Nicks on tour. When the Warren Brothers released their 1999 album “Beautiful Day in the Cold Cruel World,” they enlisted Michael McDonald to sing backing vocals. That same year, he also made three vocal appearances on Chicago XXVI: Live in Concert.

In the year 2000, Michael McDonald, Jeff Bridges, and Chris Pelonis established the record company Ramp Records. His tour with Donald Fagan and Boz Scaggs in 2010 was his most notable. He has also shared the stage with the Holy Ghost, a techno group. It’s not just ’30 Rock’ and ‘American Idol’ that he’s made appearances; he’s also done guest spots on other series. Michael McDonald’s first professional gig was as a fill-in keyboardist for the Doobie Brothers.

The band was so delighted by his performance that he was given the opportunity to sing lead and write songs for them. In a span of months, he shifted the band’s style from funk-rock to jazzy R&B. He had already established his signature style with hits like “Taking It to the Streets” and “What a Fool Believes” before he joined the Doobie Brothers.

Released in 1982, “If That’s What It Takes” was his first full-length album as a solo artist. It reached its highest position on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart after debuting at number six on the Billboard 200.

In 1983, he teamed up with James Ingram for the Grammy-winning pop tune “Yah Mo B There.” The highest position the song reached on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart was number 19. His 1986 duet with Patti LaBelle, “On My Own,” topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot Black Singles charts.

Michael McDonald and Patti LaBelle worked together on the song “On My Own” without ever ever meeting. In June of 1986, the artists finally connected. Michael McDonald’s deep, soulful baritone propelled him to fame in the late ’70s as one of the most famous and beloved vocalists to come out of the chill California pop/rock era.

McDonald got famous quickly due to his innovative fusion of blue-eyed soul and soft rock. He had already begun to develop his signature sound on songs like “What a Fool Believes” and “Taking It to the Streets” before he even joined the Doobie Brothers. McDonald’s solo career got off to a strong start, but he lost popularity by the decade’s end because he was unwilling to commit to a consistent work schedule or adapt to shifting musical trends. In 1982, he decided to leave the band and launch a solo career, which proved to be a huge success.

In the mid-1970s, Michael McDonald was a backup singer for Steely Dan, and afterward, in 1977, he joined the Doobie Brothers. He was a major force in moving the band away from boogie rock and toward jazzy blue-eyed soul throughout his tenure with the band. Before the Doobies’ final tour in 1982, he sang harmony on several hit singles by Donna Summer, Toto, Kenny Loggins, and Christopher Cross. It turned out that McDonald’s solo effort was a blend of white-bread soul in the vein of the Doobie Brothers and adult current ballads.

McDonald’s solo debut, If That’s What It Takes, came out in 1982. After entering at number four on the pop singles chart, “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” made it into the R&B Top Ten. In 1983, his duet with James Ingram, “Yah Mo B There,” reached No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 10 on the R&B charts. Although it was recorded in 1983, McDonald’s second solo effort, No Lookin’ Back, did not see its initial release until 1985.

The album didn’t go as well as its predecessor because it only had one moderate hit single. In the following year, he reclaimed his place at the top of the charts with the Patti LaBelle duet “On My Own,” as well as with “Sweet Freedom,” the song from the Billy Crystal/Gregory Hines comedy Running Scared.

He had already established his signature style with hits like “Taking It to the Streets” and “What a Fool Believes” before he joined the Doobie Brothers.

Instead of capitalizing on his renewed success, McDonald waited until 1990 to release a new album. The resulting album, titled Take It to Heart, failed miserably and peaked at number 110. In the subsequent two years, he worked with Aretha Franklin on her minor hit “Ever Changing Times” and performed with Donald Fagen’s New York Rock and Soul Revue, both of which boosted his income. A commercial flop, his next album, Blink of an Eye, was released the following year. When Warren G covered “I Keep Forgetting (Every Time You’re Near)” in 1994, he included a large sample of the song in his smash hit “Regulate.”

In 1996, the Doobie Brothers got back together for a tour, and McDonald was there to be a part of it. With 2012’s Blue Obsession, he released his first new studio album in three. In 2001, he released In the Spirit: A Christmas Album, then in 2003, he began releasing albums under the moniker Motown. The follow-up to 2004’s Motown Two, Soul Speak, was released in 2007. Motown Live: A Tribute arrived in 2009.

After releasing his first solo album in 2010, Michael McDonald spent the first half of the 2010s touring with the Dukes of September, a band fronted by Boz Scaggs and Donald Fagen. He gained famous among young musicians after working on albums with established acts like Grizzly Bear and Thundercat. To date, it has been 17 years since McDonald’s last released any new music before 2017’s Wide Open.
