John Williams, John Towner Williams in full, (born on February 8, 1932, Queens, New York, U.S.), was an American writer who created some of the most iconic film scores ever. He wrote over a hundred films, many directed by Steven Spielberg.
Williams was raised in New York, the CBS radio orchestra’s son of a percussionist. He was exposed to young musicians and started to study piano as a child, then trumpet, trombone, and clarinet. He began to write early music and tried as a teen to orchestrate his own pieces. In 1948 Williams and his family moved to Los Angeles, studying composition privately and briefly at Los Angeles University. In 1951, he was drawn into the U.S. Air Force, arranged band music, and began conducting during his service.
He then returned to California and worked for films such as Some Like It Hot (1959), West Side Story (1961), and To Kill a Mockingbird as a Hollywood studio pianist (1962). During that time he started to compose for TV, to write songs for shows like Wagon Train and Gilligan’s Island.
In the early seventies, Williams made his name as a composer for large-scale disaster films, including The Poseidon Adventure (1972), and then an aspiring Director Spielberg asked him to score his first feature, The Sugarland Express (1974). Williams has made some of the most memorable music in film history throughout his long career, including scores and iconic theme songs for nine of the Star Wars films (in 1977, 1980, 1983, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019). Lucas came back as the director (he made the first film but he didn’t make two sequences of it) and used the new cast of popular young actors – including Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman – as well as advances in digital video technology. In the 21st century, however, the Star Wars franchise remained incredibly lucrative. It included not only clothing and action and a variety of book series, but also the animated movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) — depicting events that took place between the second episode of Lucas and episode III — and many of Lucas Arts’ successful video game lines.
