Loretta Lynn, born Loretta Webb, (b. April 14, 1932), American country music singer, known as the Queen of the Country, butchers Hollow, Kentucky.
Webb was born in the shack of a coal miner. In 1970 she published her song “Coal Miner’s Daughter” which was the name of an autobiography best-selling and a popular movie (1980).
Lynn retired from the music industry in the 1990s but started recording in 2000 again. She joined Jack White from the White Stripes Alternative Rock in 2004 in producing the Van Lear Rose album, which was honoured with two Grammy Awards and a new Lynn audience. Known as “Ginny” in her youth, she started singing to local country bands while a teenager sometimes accompanied herself on guitar. By the time she reached her early twenties, Cline stood up as “Patsy” and went into Country Music Stardom. She first recorded in 1955 on Four Star, but she got a wider audience with the advent of the culture of television in the late 1950s. During the Great Depression and World War II, Country music has been transferred to new areas and exposed to new influences, such as blues and gospel music, by many southern rural Whites. The nostalgia for country music in a time of widespread change in population, with its lyrics about melting poverty, orphaned children, bereft enthusiasts and lonely workers far removed from the home, was particularly appealing.
In the 1930s, some “singing cowboy” film stars, the best known of which was Gene Autry, took country music and turned it into synthetic and adventurous “west” music with properly altered texts. In the 1930s in Texas-Oklahoma a second and substantial variant of country music arose, exposing rural white music to black orchestra swing jazz. In response, Bob Wills and others were able to develop a west swing style, featuring steel, amplified guitars and a strong dance rhythm. Honky-tonk, a country style that emerged in the 1940s, was an even more important variant with figures like Ernest Tubb and Hank Williams. Other country musicians widely adopted Honky-mixture Tonk’s of fiddle-steel guitar and its bitter, maudlinly lyrics on rural white adrift in the big city.
In the same period, there was a concerted effort to recover some of the root values of country music. The Blue Grass Boys, a mandolin player, Bill Monroe, has recently discarded rhythms and instruments and re-introduced lead fiddle and high harmony song. His banjoist, Earl Scruggs, developed a brilliant 3-finger picking style to lead the instrument. Their music took from the band of Monroe the name “bluegrass” with its driving, syncopated rhythms, and instrumental virtuosity.
But marketing proved to be much stronger, as country music became popular in all sections of the United States after the Second World War. In 1942 Roy Acuff, one of the leading country singers, co-organized the first country music publisher in Nashville. The meteoric rise of Hank Williams in the late 1940s helped to create Nashville as the undisputed country music centre with its major discovery studios and the Grand Ole Opry as its leading venue. Country music was a huge commercial company in the 1950s and 1960s, with leading artists like Tex Ritter, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Charley Pride. Popular vocalists often recorded Nashville-style songs and many country music recordings employed lush orchestral backgrounds.
