At a very young age, Mickelson played golf, hitting his first golf balls at the age of 18 months. He learned the basics of the sport by reflecting the swing of his dad, which led to Phil’s natural right-hand adoption of the left-hand stroke which would lead to his surname, “Lefty.” He has won dozens of San Diego tournaments as a junior golfer and has won three consecutive National Junior Player of the Year Awards (1986, 1987, 1988). In each of its four years in ASU, Mickelson was appointed first all-American team and won three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) (1989, 1990, 1992). He won the American Amateur Championship in 1990 and his first Northern Telecom Open PGA Tour was won the following year, making him the fourth amateur to win the PGA tournament.

In 1992, Mickelson joined the PGA Tour. His first professional win came at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego in 1993, where he played high school golf games. Mickelson won at least one tourney each in the following three years and completed his first Top 10 world classification for the 1996 PGA season (seventh). In 2001, he finished second in the rankings behind Tiger Woods. The two golfers developed a rivalry that dominated the sport over the decade as the outgoing Mickelson and the more reserved Woods split their different personalities and approaches to the game. Mickelson, despite his great touring success, was recognized as the worldwide lead player who never won a major tourney (the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open [Open Championship], and the PGA Championship), making his second or third in six majors between 1999 and 2003 more burdensome.

He finally won a major win in 2004 when he won the Masters one-stroke against Ernie Els.  In April 2010, Mickelson won his third green jacket as Masters Champion and struck four others for the third-highest career in the history of the tournament.

After his third Master’s victory, Mickelson fell a bit and won only one tournament every year from 2010 to 2012. On the final day of the British Open, he made up a five-shot deficit in 2013 to capture his first victory in this tournament. He then fought and won no other PGA Tour event until 2018. The following year, with his win at Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he won his 45th PGA title. He also participated in the Ryder Cup and became a winner in 1999, 2008, and 2016. In 2021, he won his sixth major career title and in more than two years won the PGA championship. He was the oldest winner of a major tournament in PGA history at the age of 50.

British Open or Open, one of the four major golf competitions worldwide—with the Master’s Tournament, the U.S. Open, and the Professional Golfer Championships (PGA)—and the oldest ever running sports championship. Best known outside America as the Open Championship or just the Open, it has been held in Scotland, England and, on one occasion, North Ireland since 1860 on a number of races annually (with a few exceptions). The first Open Championship was held at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland on 17 October 1860. Eight professionals played three rounds in one day of Prestwick’s 12-hole course. Willie Park, Sr., won the inaugural tournament and received a silver-buckled leather belt from the Challenge Belt, which each champion would keep until the following Open. In 1863, a purse of £10 was added and a first-place cash prize of £6 was added to professionals, who finished in second, third, and fourth position. In 1870 Tom Morris Jr. won the Open for the third time in succession and the Challenge Belt could thus be maintained permanently. As the winner was not presented with an award, the Open was not held until 1872 when the winning golfer was determined to receive the Golf Champion Trophy, now commonly known as the Claret Jug. In 1892 the Open was a 72-hole event (four 18-holes rounds) and after the first two rounds of play in 1898 a cut (field reduction) was introduced.

In 1995 the Open became part of the official schedule of the PGA Tour. American John Daly won the Italian playoff, Costantino Rocca, that year, and began another American supremacy in the Open, in which 10 out of the following 13 winners, Tiger Woods, won three championships (2000, 2005-06), were hailed from the US. A number of golfers won the Open for their first major tournament victory in the following years, including Paul Lawrie in 1999, David Duval in 2001, Ben Curtis in 2003, and Padraig Harrington in 2007.

Another outstanding Open Champion is Jack Nicklaus, who won in 1966, 1970, and 1978 and ranked 16 times in the Top Five, including seven-second places. Harry Vardon won the Open six times — more than any other player — and four golfers won five championships, including Thomson and Watson. The record for most of the Open appearances is South African Gary Player, who won the title in 1959, 1968, and 1974, with 46.

The Open was exclusively played at the Prestwick Golf Club from 1860 to 1870. It has been played in a number of rotational courses since 1872. At first, the three courses in Scotland were Prestwick, St. Andrews, and Musselburgh.

The Open is a unique event and is of great importance to both professionals and amateur golfers and golf enthusiasts. Contrary to the playing of other major players, which is typically disputed in sunny locations in the US, the outcome of the Open is often weather-driven. On a course of links, tee times in the morning and afternoon can produce very different conditions, depending on the breeze in the ocean. The weather is one of the many unique features of the Open, combining its long history and prestigious reputation to make it a unique event in the field of golf.

This author, who had a warm welcome from his home crowd when he finished second in 2005 at the Tiger Woods in St. Andrews, is looking forward to the Open every year. The Open is for him pure romance and theatre, and it is indeed a special event every golfer dreams of winning.

San Diego, port and city, San Diego county seat (1850), South California, United States. It is located along the Pacific Ocean on San Diego Bay, just north of the international Mexican border and about 120 kilometers southeast of Los Angeles. The city consists of two portions of unequal size: the far broader part extends from San Diego Bay to the north and east, and the smaller part stretches from the bay to the Mexican border to the south-east. The townsite features a variety of large mesas, canyons, and wide valleys. The landscape becomes more hilly in the north (especially in the La Jolla area) and in the east towards a mountain range at the edge of the main built area. The area has a mild, sunny climate all year round; the small precipitation is mostly in winter.

San Diego Bay is nearly landscaped, one of the finest natural deep-water harbors in the world (57 square km). It is covered by two overlapping peninsulas – Point Loma on the north and on the west and Silver Beach on the south and west – and linked by a narrow channel with the Pacific on the northwest. The bay is the focus of international shipping and one of the largest military bases in the country.
