Los Angeles Kings, a National Hockey League (NHL) franchise based in Los Angeles that competes in the West Division (NHL). The Kings have two Stanley Cups (2012) and a conference championship (2013) to their credit (1993, 2012, and 2014).

In 1967, the NHL added the Kings as one of its “Original Six” expansion franchises. However, the Kings’ first six seasons were essentially forgettable, with losing records in all of them (although twice qualifying for the postseason, and even winning a first-round series in 1968–69 despite having the lowest record of any playoff teams that year). Rogatien (Rogie) Vachon (1971–1988), Marcel Dionne (1975–87), and right-wing Dave Taylor (1977–94) all contributed to the Kings’ nine straight playoff appearances between 1973–74 and 1981–82, but they only made it through the first round three times. The 1981–82 season was also the start of the Kings finishing last or second-to-last in their division for seven successive seasons.

This changed radically in 1988, after a long period when they had barely made a dent in the NHL. During that year, the Kings acquired Edmonton Oilers superstar Wayne Gretzky in a transaction that went down in hockey history as one of the most crucial. He took home the Hart Memorial Trophy (the league’s MVP award) in his first season with the Kings and led them to their first division title in 1990–91, but the Kings failed to make it out of the second round in his first four seasons in Los Angeles’ organization.

In 1992–93, the Kings, led by Wayne Gretzky, Luc Robitaille on the left-wing, and Rob Blake on the blue line, broke through, winning the Western Conference before falling to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup finals in seven games. When they returned for their second season, the Kings’ play had deteriorated dramatically, and they finished sixth in the Western Conference, beginning a four-year playoff hiatus. As a result of moving Wayne Gretzky to the St. Louis Blues in 1996, the Kings’ roster had been dramatically rebuilt when they made a postseason run in 1997–98.

Los Angeles missed the playoffs nine times in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Ane Kopitar and Dustin Brown spearheaded the Kings’ postseason comebacks in 2009–10 and 2010–11, but they were swept in the first round each time. A spectacular playoff run in ice hockey history was made by the Los Angeles Kings in 2011–12, who qualified for the postseason as the conference’s eighth seed. With an NHL-record eight straight postseason road wins, they defeated the three highest-seeded clubs in their conference (the Vancouver Canucks, the St. Louis Blues, and the Phoenix Coyotes) to reach the Stanley Cup finals.

Los Angeles Kings Biography/Wiki

In the end, the Kings won all six games of the series against the New Jersey Devils to win the Stanley Cup as the lowest-seeded club ever. In 2012–13, the Kings made back-to-back trips to the conference finals (where they were defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks). This was followed by a stunning playoff run by the Kings the next year (see below). Los Angeles defeated the San Jose Sharks 4–3 in the first round, becoming the third team in NHL history to come back from a 3–0 series deficit to win the series. As a result, the Kings went on to win two more seven-game series to reach the Stanley Cup finals, each of which the crucial seventh game was played away from home (as was the case against the Sharks).

As in the regular season, the Kings were able to defeat the New York Rangers in five games, winning three of them in extra time. The squad missed the playoffs for the first time in five years in 2014–15 after finishing two points short of the cutoff. The next year, the Kings made it back to the playoffs, but they were eliminated by the Sharks in the first round. When the 2017–18 season ended, the Kings returned to the playoffs for the first time since missing them the previous year. However, they were swept by the newly formed expansion team, the Vegas Golden Knights.

Hockey’s world professional championship trophy, awarded each year after a play-off round that concludes the NHL season. As the oldest trophy available to professional athletes in North America, the Stanley Cup dates back to the 1892–93 season. Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston, Canada’s governor-general, donated the cup, which bears his name.

The initial plan was for it to go to the best Canadian amateur athletic team, which was selected by a play-off, with the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association emerging victorious. In the beginning, amateur teams fought for the cup, but as the number of professional teams increased, amateurs were forced to withdraw. In 1926, the cup was given to the National Hockey League as a gift. (The table below contains a list of Stanley Cup champions.)
