Puritans’ intolerance to laziness and luxury benefited the emerging settlements of New England well, as the labour to be done was enormous and the number of hands was limited. Enlightened religious leaders and a well-educated clergy were regarded highly by the populace during the 17th century, which fueled the creation of public schools and universities, among them Harvard and Yale (1701).
Town meetings, a broader franchise, and civil rights were hallmarks of New England’s representative administrations, which were isolated from the rest of the United States. New England Revolution Biography/Wiki
A revolt for independence from Great Britain took root in New England throughout the 18th century, and its patriots were instrumental in founding the United States of America. The region backed a national tariff and the Federalist Party’s policies in the early years of the republic.
Culturally, New England in the 19th century was defined by its literary flourishing and a deep evangelical dedication that frequently revealed itself in the fervour for reform: abolition of slavery, improvements in prisons and insane asylums, and an end to the use of child labour. While New England remained steadfast in its support of the Union during the American Civil War (1861–65), the antislavery movement eventually overtook it.
Migrants from New England spread their culture and governance to new regions in the Midwest as the American frontier expanded westward. New England was effectively invaded by the Industrial Revolution during this time period, and industry took over the economy. Itinerant Yankee peddlers brought goods like textiles, shoes, clocks, and hardware as far west as the Mississippi River.
Traditional Protestantism had to share its power with Roman Catholicism both prior to and following the American Civil War, due to an ethnic revolution brought on by the influx of Irish and Eastern European immigrants.
New England had a lot of transformation during the twentieth century. Once-thriving textile and leather-good businesses completely abandoned the region following World War II for sites further south. As a result of this decline, however, New England’s long-term economic viability appeared to be secure in the late 20th century due to the expansion of high-tech and service-based economic companies in the region’s economy.
