The Giants were notable for their early success and their dominance in the 1980s and 1990s under head coach Bill Parcells. The Giants were founded in 1925 in New York and spent their first three decades at upper Manhattan’s Polo Grounds. Tim Mara purchased the franchise for $500 and his family held ownership of the team until the twenty-first century (in 1930 he split ownership between his two sons, Jack and Wellington). Although the Giants were defeated 14–0 by the Frankford Yellow Jackets in their inaugural game, they immediately established themselves as one of the premier teams of early professional football, capturing NFL titles in 1927, 1934, and 1938.

The Giants defeated the Washington Redskins 30–13 in the famed “Sneakers Game”; the Giants trailed at halftime but switched to basketball shoes to increase grip on the freezing field. The Giants sustained their success over the next decade, advancing to (but losing) four NFL championship games (1939, 1941, 1944, and 1946). The squad struggled on the field in the late 1940s, having consecutive losing seasons in 1947, 1948, and 1949 before regaining success in the 1950s.

The 1950s club was particularly famous for its coaching staff, which included Vince Lombardi as offensive coordinator and Tom Landry as defensive coordinator. Both coaches become Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys icons. The 1958 NFL championship game paired the Giants against the Baltimore Colts, in what was widely regarded as one of the greatest games in football history. The Colts defeated the Giants 23–17 in a dramatic match that concluded in sudden-death overtime in front of a national television audience. The game launched the NFL’s meteoric rise to popularity in the United States.

During this stretch, the Giants suffered one of their most heinous defeats in what became known as the “Miracle at the Meadowlands” or “The Fumble”; on November 19, 1978, against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Giants led 17–12 and needed only to run out the clock to win, but an errant handoff from quarterback Joe Pisarcik to fullback Larry Csonka allowed Eagles’ Herman Edwards to recover a fumble and run 26 yards into

New York Giants Biography/Wiki

Bill Parcells was hired as the Giants’ head coach in 1983. Parcells put up squads that included Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson at linebacker, Phil Simms at quarterback, and Mark Bavaro at tight end. The Giants won Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990 and continued to be successful for the majority of Parcells’ tenure. After winning a second Super Bowl, Parcells left the franchise, and the Giants had a mixed record from 1991 to 2000, with four winning seasons. They progressed to the Super Bowl in 2000 but were defeated 34–7 by the Baltimore Ravens.

In 2004, Tom Coughlin was hired as the franchise’s head coach, and despite some criticism of his coaching approach, the Giants performed admirably under his leadership. In Super Bowl XLII in 2008, the Giants pulled off one of the greatest upsets in NFL history, defeating the previously unbeaten and strongly favored New England Patriots. Following a two-year playoff hiatus, the Giants returned to the Super Bowl in 2011 and defeated the Patriots 21–17.

The team recorded average records over the next four seasons, missing the playoffs each year, prompting Coughlin’s departure from the franchise following the 2015 season. The Giants finished 11–5 in 2016, thanks to an improved defense, and qualified for the play-offs, but New York lost its opening game. It was a brief improvement, however, as the Giants suffered a number of big injuries in 2017, contributing to the team finishing with the NFL’s second-worst record (3–13).
