The band, which was created by schoolmates Peter Furler and George Perdikis, has had a roster that has been the polar opposite of a stable of musicians. Since 1988, the band has released 17 studio albums, or around one every other year, with the most recent being released in 2017. By the mid-1990s, the band’s original lineup had been reduced to bassist Sean Taylor and vocalist John James, both of whom had left the group.

However, while the band’s first three studio albums failed to chart in the United States, that changed in 1994, thanks to the popularity of their blockbuster hit single “Shine,” which came from their album “Going Public.” After winning the 25th annual GMA Dove Awards, “Shine” was named “Rock Recorded Song of the Year,” while the album took home the award for “Rock Album of the Year.” CCM Magazine named “Going Public” one of the “100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music” in 2001, and the album has received both commercial and critical praise in the Christian music industry since its release. According to CCM Magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music,” “Shine” was named #9 on the list in 2009, proving that the band’s debut album has stood the test of time.

However, even after numerous lineup changes (including the departure of singer James, who left the band in 1997 due to drug and alcohol misuse), the band’s continued financial success failed to reflect the band’s internal strife.

In actuality, albums such as “Take Me To Your Leader” only had a total of five songs reach #1 on Christian Rock charts, yet songs such as “He Reigns” from “Adoration: The Worship Album” and “We Believe” from 2013’s “Restart” had months of constant crossover popularity.
However, while other bands try to avoid using the term “Christian rock,” the Newsboys – along with their fans – have embraced the phrase throughout their careers. This includes the previously stated “Adoration: The Worship Album” from 2003 as well as the 2004 album “Devotion.”

While the Newsboys have not only proudly worn their Christian identity on their sleeves, they have also appeared in Christian drama films such as “God’s Not Dead” (2014) and “God’s Not Dead 2.” (2016).

Australia’s Newsboys, one of Christian rock’s most lasting bands, originally rose to prominence in the 1990s, becoming perennial chart-toppers with a global fanbase that followed them through three separate eras, each led by a different frontman, before breaking up in 2011. Having begun with vocalist John James, they enjoyed the second decade of mainstream pop success in the 2000s with Peter Furler, who was himself superseded by another Christian star in the form of dc Talk’s Michael Tait, who joined the group the next year. The band explored many aspects of rock, pop, and more basic praise music along the way. They received numerous Grammy nominations, gold records, and over 30 number one hits as a result of their efforts. Following Furler’s comeback, an expanded lineup soon formed, resulting in the Furler/Tait-fronted supergroup Newsboys United, which released a studio album in 2019. Newsboys resurfaced two years later with their twentieth studio album, Stand, which was released without Furler.

The Newsboys were founded in the late 1980s in the Queensland resort town of Mooloolaba by John James, Peter Furler, and Phil Joel, who established a core group of musicians. Even though they were first criticized for what they thought to be an over-reliance on religious clichés in their lyrics, Newsboys later seized the opportunity presented by secular music’s alternative movement in the early 1990s to transform their public image, with positive results. A streak of number one Christian radio singles in the mid-’90s and more mainstream media coverage than most CCM bands of the time helped the group achieve success. With James on lead vocals and a stable guitarist, Jody Davis, the group was able to achieve success.

As a result of James’ departure from the band he helped create after six studio albums, Furler took over as frontman for Step Up to the Microphone, which was the group’s first record for major-label Virgin Records. The Love Liberty Disco, which was influenced by the ’70s, debuted a year later. The greatest-hits collection Shine…The Hits, released in the fall of 2000, marked the beginning of the new millennium as well as the band’s own career. Their most ambitious album to date, Thrive, was released in 2002 and yielded one of the most successful contemporary Christian music singles of all time, “It Is You.” Adoration: The Worship Album was released by the band in April 2003. The tracks on that album were both originals and Newsboys’ renditions of well-known praise and worship tunes.

Guitarist Davis left Newsboys in late 2003 to care for his daughter, and Bryan Olesen filled in for him for a little more than a year before Davis returned. He quit Newsboys in 2004 to focus on his own project, Casting Pearls, which was published shortly after the release of their second worship album, Devotion. Paul Coleman, an Australian singer/songwriter, joined the band as their new guitarist, and the trio spent the next two years touring the world and writing the songs that would eventually be released on their first pop album in four years, Go. Coming in at number one on the charts in October 2006, it was the first album to be issued under the Newsboys’ own Inpop Records label and the final to contain founding member Joel, who departed the band shortly after.

Newsboys Biography/Wiki

Coleman departed the band at the beginning of 2009, after a year of touring, to pursue a solo career, and Jody Davis rejoined the group. In possibly the most unexpected turn of events, Furler revealed shortly afterward that he would be scaling up his engagement with Newsboys, no longer traveling with them and instead of remaining behind the scenes as a songwriter and vocalist. Michael Tait of dc Talk, one of the great titans of Christian rock, was brought in to fill in for him as a replacement. In the Hands of God, the band’s final album with Furler as lead singer was released in May 2009, just before Tait took over the reins completely.

The group’s next album, Born Again, was released in 2010 and opened at number four on the Billboard 200 chart. By September of that year, Furler had left the group, and Tait had taken up the lead vocals. The new-look Tait-led Newsboys returned in 2011 with the studio album God’s Not Dead, then in 2013 they released Restart, their 16th studio album, which was met with a positive reception. A further worship album, the hymn-centric Hallelujah for the Cross, was released in 2013, and it was followed by Love Riot in 2016, which saw Newsboys return to a more pop-oriented sound.

Almost a year later, both Furler and Joel were able to perform with the group as part of their extensive Newsboys United retrospective tour. The success of the tour was translated into a new studio album by this larger version of the band, which was branded as Newsboys United. The United LP was released in May of 2019. In Billboard 200, it debuted in the Top 20 of the chart. When the hook-driven Stand was released in late 2021, the four-piece comprised of Tait, Davis, and longtime members Duncan Phillips (drums) and Jeff Frankenstein (keyboards) was hailed as a triumph.
