Simon Marc Amstell is an English comedian, television presenter, screenwriter, director, and actor. He is best known for his roles as the former host of Popworld and Never Mind the Buzzcocks and as the co-writer and star of Grandma’s House. Amstell was born on November 29, 1979, in England. 1979 saw the birth of Amstell in Gants Hill, located in the borough of Redbridge in east London. His parents were named David and Tina (née Leventhal) Amstell. He was the oldest of four children and grew up in a Jewish home. He was the head of the household.
He received his education at Beal High School, a state comprehensive school in Ilford. His parents’ choice to divorce in the early 1990s has been a recurring topic throughout his stand-up career. He also claims that the decision his parents made when he was born to circumcise him led him to experience a feeling of immense emotional as well as bodily loss. Amstell first debuted on television in 1993 when he participated in the game show GamesMaster on Channel 4.
In 1994, he was a guest on the morning show Good Morning with Anne and Nick, when he imitated Dame Edna Everage. Later in the same year, he appeared on an episode of Family Catchphrase. He described himself as an aspiring magician and demonstrated one of his tricks to the program host, Andrew O’Connor, who was himself a magician. A television and a video recorder were among the prizes that the Amstell family took home.
Amstell began his career as a comedian while he was still in his early teens and went on to become the youngest finalist to ever feature in the BBC New Comedy Awards. In 1998, he had his first professional appearance on television, hosting a show for children on the Nickelodeon channel in the United Kingdom. His first job in television was at Nickelodeon when he was dismissed for making pop artists feel awkward. He went on to have a television career.
After that, he became the host of the program Popworld on Channel 4, where he amassed a massive fanbase because of his innovative techniques that put pop singers in an awkward position. Amstell and Miquita Oliver co-hosted the music program Popworld on Channel 4 from 2000 to 2006. He provided the voices for the characters “Timothy the Popworld melon” and “Richard the Popworld horse,” He established a highly sarcastic, bizarre, and left-field style that garnered the program a cult following but alienated many of the show’s guests.
One such example is a sham interview that Amstell conducted with the musician Lemar titled “Lemar From Afar.” In this interview, Amstell yelled questions through a megaphone while standing at one end of the world’s most considerable parking lot, while Lemar stood at the other. Another was a “Si-psychiatrist” interview that Amstell did with Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris of The Kooks. In this interview, Amstell acted as the psychiatrist, while Pritchard and Harris played the roles of his patients. Amstell appeared on the comedy program Never Mind the Buzzcocks in 2003 and again in 2006 as a guest when Mark Lamarr served as the show’s presenter.
With Lamarr’s departure, he first filled in as one of the series’ guest hosts until being given the role of regular host in October of 2006. When asked about his goals, he said he wanted to defy “the universal, exceptionless rule that when a new host takes over an established program, it is a horrific, humiliating fiasco.” In June 2007, Amstell and his long-time colleague Dan Swimer developed Imagine… A Mildly Amusing Panel Show was a parody of Alan Yentob’s arts program Imagine. The show was titled “A Mildly Amusing Panel Show.”
Yentob and Amstell portray themselves in a pretend interview between what several observers regarded as “overtly sexual”[citation required] segments culled from Amstell’s Never Mind the Buzzcocks episodes. After that, in February of 2008, Never Mind the Buzzcocks: A Moving Tribute was released. This episode sarcastically indicated that Amstell had passed away or retired from the program. On April 25, 2009, Amstell announced via his internet mailing list that he would not be hosting another Never Mind the Buzzcocks series due to his desire to focus on his live tours and stand-up performances instead. This decision was because Amstell did not want to take time away from his stand-up routines and outings.
Because of his work on “Never Mind the Buzzcocks,” Amstell was honored with many accolades. In March 2007, he was awarded Outstanding Entertainment Performance by the Royal Television Society for 2006. In December of 2007, he was awarded two British Comedy Awards for his work on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, nominated for Best Comedy Entertainment Personality and Best Comedy Entertainment Series. In addition, Never Mind the Buzzcocks was recognized as the year’s most outstanding entertainment program at the Broadcast Awards in 2008.
Because of Amstell’s tenure, Never Mind the Buzzcocks earned a spot on The Times’ list of the top 50 television shows of the 2000s at the 36th spot. In 2010, the Buzzcocks team captain Noel Fielding said Amstell had “ruined” the program. He said several individuals were afraid to participate in the show because they believed Amstell would criticize or shame them. This was refuted by Fielding at a later time.
When Fielding served as a guest captain before being promoted to his current position, he argued with Amstell on the program, who made fun of his absurd sense of humor. The idea was only half-joking. According to the British Comedy Guide, there may have been some conflict. Samuel Preston, the vocalist for The Ordinary Boys, stormed off stage after Amstell read parts from the autobiography of Chantelle Houghton, his wife at the time. Amstell was reading from the book.
In 2009, BBC2 paid Tiger Aspect Productions for a six-part series called Grandma’s Home. The program would be written by, and Dan Swimer would co-author star Amstell and it. After the presentation of the show’s pilot episode earlier in the same year, the network decided to order the series. Production of the show began in February 2010, and it debuted on television in August of that same year. The second season of Grandma’s Home first debuted on television in April 2012. Amstell said that this would be the last series of their work.
Amstell’s Carnage debuted on the BBC iPlayer for the first time on March 19, 2017. The story occurred in 2067 when the United Kingdom adopted a vegan diet, and the older generations were struggling with the consequences of their omnivorous eating habits. In 2015, he created and directed the short film “William,” which starred Alex Lawther. In January of the same year, Alex Lawther was awarded the London Film Critics Circle Award for “Young British Performer of the Year.” Something More was a television program Amstell wrote and directed for Channel 4 in 2016.
Amstell announced that his debut book, “HELP,” would be published the following year (2017). It is a compilation of annotated stand-up scripts as well as anecdotes that are connected. It will be distributed to the public on September 21st, 2017. In 2017, it was revealed that Open Palm Films would be producing Amstell’s newest project, Benjamin, a film he has written and will direct. Open Palm Films will also make the picture. Amstell is also a stand-up comedian, and he performs his act live. He performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009.
In addition, he has appeared in the Cabaret and Comedy Tent at the Carling Festivals for the last two years. In 2008, Amstell finished his first tour in the United Kingdom. In July 2009, he performed at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. His performance at the Bongo Club during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2009 was completely sold out. In the fall of 2009, he embarked on his second trip across the country for his tour.
In May of 2010, Amstell recorded Do Nothing at the Vicar Street venue in Dublin in preparation for the DVD release in November. It was shown on BBC3 and the BBC iPlayer between December 2011 and April of the following year. Amstell had a performance at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April 2012. Amstell kicked out his “Numb Tour” in the United Kingdom and Ireland in May and June 2012.
Amstell’s performance of “Numb” ran in New York City at Theatre 80 in the East Village from the 10th of July to the 9th of August in 2012. A one-off stand-up exceptional performance of Simon Amstell’s stand-up act, “Numb,” which he toured to sell-out crowds in 2012, was filmed for the BBC at TV Centre on the evening of New Year’s Eve in 2012. The program was shown on BBC One in 2013.
After he departed from Popworld, Amstell presented the music-themed game show Never Mind the Buzzcocks from 2006 to 2009. Since then, he has performed countless stand-up comedy events and produced the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) sitcom Grandma’s Home, which lasted for two seasons until being canceled in 2012. In addition, he has directed two full-length motion pictures, the mockumentary Carnage (2017) and the comedy-drama Benjamin (2018), both of which star Colin Morgan and Jack Rowan.
Amstell released his first feature film, Carnage, in 2017, and then in 2018, he released Benjamin, which had its world premiere at the London Film Festival organized by the BFI. Producing duties are being handled by Louise Palmkvist Hansen of Emu Films. Amstell, Michael Elliott, Jim Mooney, Walli Ullah of Emu Films, Cora Palfrey, and Sarah Lebutsch of Independent Entertainment are executive producers.
Even though he may have given up the bold, youthful antics of his Popworld and Never Mind the Buzzcocks days in favor of a more spiritually enlightened path, Simon Amstell is more charmingly upbeat than ever. He punctuated even his most profound statements with sudden giggles while conversing. Don’t worry: Simon Amstell is more charmingly buoyant than ever before. The English stand-up comedian is back on the road with his Spirit Hole tour after the success of his 2019 Netflix comedy special, Set Free, and two features, Carnage (2017) and Benjamin (2018), which he wrote and directed. The performance, which will debut in Ireland in May, is unmistakably the product of a guy who has spent the best of the previous several years honing his capacity for emotional intelligence.
Maria, having difficulty coming to terms with her age, the love of her lover, and her father’s lack of interest in her life, sees a chance at her father’s wedding to feel youthful, accessible, and attractive. Then, she meets Raffy, who will be her new stepbrother. The news that her father has been diagnosed with a life-limiting disease makes their undeniable sexual attraction, which was already an awkward situation, much more so. Amstell has previously written and directed two films, including the mockumentary Carnage (2017), which takes a satirical look back on the present when meat-eating is socially acceptable from the perspective of 2067 when veganism is the norm, and 2018’s Benjamin, which is a comedy-drama about the eponymous filmmaker’s struggle to connect with his French musician boyfriend.
