Gordon got his first call on his first afternoon show Tuesday from morning host Paul W. Smith, who is on vacation this week, and Gordon is filling in for him.
Gordon, 58, joined Channel 7 in October 1984 as a reporter for the Detroit area. Tram, as in Alan Trammell, and his Detroit Tigers colleagues had just won the World Series, but Bubba Helms, a pot-bellied youngster, had contrived to become the face of the celebration by posing with a team pennant in front of a burning police cruiser.
Aside from the Tigers, “everything else” was “on fire.” Gordon says, “literally.”
He believes that he’s attended seven press conferences since then, each announcing something fantastic and ultimately fictitious for the old Hudson’s site.
“There are things to talk about now,” he says, referring to the city’s geographically targeted but obvious rebirth.
His contract at WDIV, he claims, expired in August, despite the station’s insistence that he re-enlist. He was fired from the late-morning “Live in the D” show 15 months ago in favour of Chuck Gaidica, and he admits that leaving a reporting job was simpler than leaving an anchor position.
However, he may have leapt regardless. “Guys my age don’t have a chance at an Act III,” he says.
