Jim Bakker, also known as James Orsen Bakker, is an American televangelist and convicted fraudster who was born on January 2, 1940. Bakker and his then-wife, Tammy Faye, headlined the television show The PTL Club from 1974 to 1987, and founded Heritage USA, a now-defunct Christian theme park in Fort Mill, South Carolina.

Following the discovery of accounting fraud, felony charges, convictions, incarceration, and divorce were filed. Bakker eventually remarried and returned to televangelism, building Morningside Church in Blue Eye, Missouri, and resuming the PTL ministry. He is currently the host of The Jim Bakker Show, a show that discusses biblical prophecy while also hawking emergency survival supplies. Bakker is the author of a number of publications, including I Was Wrong and Time Has Come: How to Prepare Now for Epic Events to Come.

Raleigh Bakker and Furnia Lynette “Furn” Irwin had a son named James Orsen Bakker, who was born in Muskegon, Michigan. Bakker met Tammy Faye LaValley, a fellow student at North Central University, a Minneapolis bible college connected with the Assemblies of God, in 1960. Tammy Faye worked at the Three Sisters, a local boutique, while Bakker worked at a café in the Young-Quinlan department store in Minneapolis.

The Jim Bakker Show Biography/Wiki

On April 1, 1961, the Bakkers married and left college to become itinerant evangelists. On March 13, 1992, the couple divorced. Bakker married Lori Beth Graham, a former televangelist, fifty days after they met on September 4, 1998. They adopted five children in 2002.

At the time, the network had a low-thousands audience. The Bakkers helped to the network’s success by hosting Come On Over, a children’s variety show that featured puppets and humorous routines. Because of the success of Come On Over, Robertson hired Bakker to anchor a new prime-time talk show called The 700 Club, which eventually became CBN’s flagship show. The Bakkers left CBN in 1972 and helped co-found the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) in California the following year with Paul and Jan Crouch. This relationship, however, only lasted eight months before Jim Bakker and Paul Crouch split up, forcing the Bakkers to abandon the new network.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigated Bakker and PTL in 1979 for allegedly abusing monies obtained over the airwaves. Bakker had gathered $350,000, which he said viewers would go towards funding international missions but was actually used to pay for part of Heritage USA, according to the FCC report, which was completed in 1982. The Bakkers allegedly utilised PTL funds for personal needs, according to the investigation. The FCC commissioners voted four to three to end the probe, and then allowed Bakker to sell his single television station, effectively circumventing future FCC monitoring. The Federal Communications Commission transmitted its report to the US Department of Justice, which declined to bring charges due to a lack of evidence. Bakker capitalised on the controversy by describing the probe as a “witch-hunt” and urging viewers to “give the Devil a black eye.”
